Nina’s eyes narrowed as she stared at the man who had just spoken, her voice low and dangerous. “Were you talking to me?” Nina asked.

The man scoffed, “What? Is there anyone else here with the last name Swanson besides you?”

Nina smiled, and in a flash, she was right in front of the guy, about to throw a punch. But then she remembered what her grandma had said, and let her hand fall back to her side.

The man was caught off guard by Nina’s sudden move, but when he saw her drop her hand, he burst out laughing. “Martin told me his sister likes to fight, and I didn’t really buy it.

“Guess he was right. But looks like you’re not as bold as I thought What’s wrong? Figured out I’m from the Mercer family and chickened out?”

Nina’s eyes narrowed as she stepped back, her smile widening. “You’re Martin’s friend?”

‘No wonder,’ Nina thought. ‘I didn’t even know this guy, and he just had to come looking for trouble. If he’s Martin’s friend, that explains it.

‘If he’s Martin’s friend, that figures, Nina thought. ‘Martin couldn’t handle me, so he went and found himself some backup?’

“Friend? Please, I’m the brother of Martin’s girlfriend,” Julian said, shooting Nina a mocking look. “I was planning to swing by the Swanson residence one of these days to see what kind of person could push Martin to the edge.

“Looks like I didn’t have to wait.”

Julian sized Nina up. “Other than your pretty face, there’s really #othing special about you.”

After a pause, Julian added, “Even that face? Probably got it fixed to look like Lily, huh? You girls from the nightclub really know your tricks. Anything to claw your way into high society?”

“Brother?” Nina shot a look at the girl standing next to Julian.

She remembered Martin was engaged to a girl from the Mercer family.

‘What was her name again?’ Nina wondered. She’d never really bothered to find out. But she figured it must be the girl right in front of her.

She might look all fancy, but the snobbiness was written all over her face; she practically had disdain stamped on her

forehead.

Elaine stood off to the side, frowning.

What’s up with Nina today?’ Elaine wondered. ‘Normally, she’d just kick these clowns to the curb without a second thought. She even raised her hand, but then just let it drop? Since when l she start holding back?”

‘What the hell? Elaine thought.

Seeing Nina just standing there, Elaine was about to step in herself.

But she had barely taken two steps when Nina yanked her back.

“You? You think you’re worth my revenge? Please, I was just messing with you like you’re my pet,” Julian sneered.

“Since we ran into each other today and I’m in a good mood, and you seem pretty gutsy taking on Martin and Lily, do you have the guts to play a game with me?” he added.

Nina’s smile turned wickedly radiant.

Her laughter was loud and unapologetic.

Elaine instinctively took a step back.

Nina just laughed.

‘Someone’s about to get it,’ Elaine thought. ‘Better keep my distance. Wouldn’t want to get splattered with blood.’

Just when Elaine thought Nina was about to tear Julian apart, Nina suddenly spoke up. “What kind of game?”

Elaine’s eyes went wide, staring at Nina in disbelief.

Wait, what?’ Elaine thought. ‘Seriously, Nina? This is so not your style. Aren’t you supposed to just knock him out? And now you’re actually going to play along?’

Julian was genuinely surprised Nina agreed to his challenge so easily.

‘Maybe she’s not that brave after all,’ Julian thought to himself. Just found out I’m from the Mercer family, and she’s already chickening out. She doesn’t even dare to go up against me. Guess Martin was just talking her up.’

Julian gave Nina a once-over and had to admit that she really was a knockout.

Even if she did get her face done to look like Lily, gotta say, the surgeon nailed it. She actually turned out prettier.

Julian couldn’t help but wonder what she’d be like in bed. He felt a surge of anticipation.
