Chapter 49
Dense text crawled across the screen like insects, gnawing at her
nerves.
Sophia’s vision suddenly went black, her body swaying as she nearly collapsed.
The buzzing in her ears amplified instantly, drowning out all the whispers and pointing fingers. Her chest tightened until she could barely breathe.
“Sophia!” Dorothy rushed to steady her, voice breaking with tears. “Let’s go back-back to your room…”
But the commotion had already drawn more attention.
People pressed closer, their cruel words becoming more vicious and explicit.
Someone even spat at her. A water bottle flew past, grazing her forehead before clattering to the ground.
In that moment, it was as if Sophia had become some filthy, terrifying monster.
Her face drained of all color. Unable to bear it any longer, she broke free from Dorothy’s support and stumbled toward the hospital room, running.

Sophia fled back to the VIP floor as if escaping from hell itself.
At the end of the corridor, Connor paced anxiously outside her room, glancing repeatedly at the elevator indicator lights.
The moment he saw her, he rushed forward.
“Sophia! Where were you? I was looking everywhere for you…” His voice was urgent, laced with worry. “The flu’s been going around lately, and you’re still weak. You should rest in your room-don’t wander around…”
Sophia stopped, slightly out of breath.
She looked up, her red eyes meeting Connor’s gaze.
There was concern there, tension, and just a hint of guilt.
Suddenly, she understood everything. \
“You knew all along, didn’t you?” she asked quietly. “Last night when you took my phone-it wasn’t for a system update. You were afraid I’d see this, weren’t you?”
Connor fell silent for a moment. Knowing he couldn’t hide it any longer, he nodded heavily.
“Sophia, I just didn’t want you to face this. You’re barely recovered, and this kind of online harassment… I was orried 03

Sophia listened, then smiled softly.
Couldn’t handle it?
Maybe not.
But what chilled her more was the calculation behind it all.
She understood exactly how social media worked.
Isabelle’s out-of-context video, thrown into the information explosion of the internet, would at most create a small ripple before quickly sinking into obscurity.
For it to spread this rapidly, creating such a wave of public opinion and dominating trending topics for so long-that was impossible without massive promotion and a coordinated media campaign behind it.
Among the people she knew, only Isabelle would go to such lengths to drag her through the mud.
And the man who’d said last night, “Even if you hate me, I’ll keep you by my side”-Damian.
Last night’s burning touch and today’s overwhelming malice came from the same hands.
So this was how he planned to make her hate him.

Sophia took a deep breath, suppressing tears in her eyes.
She looked at Connor’s worried face and asked quietly, “Connor, what’s their endgame with all this?”
Connor’s heart ached seeing her like this.
After a moment’s hesitation, he gently explained the situation:
Dorothy had brought her to the hospital. The scene of Michael and Damian forcing her to sign that settlement was still fresh in his memory.
Worried she might face harassment during her recovery, he’d taken it upon himself to have the hospital keep her admission information confidential.
“The Anderson family also had your phone taken away temporarily,” Connor said apologetically. “So no one could reach you. Everyone thought you’d run away from home.
“Damian searched the entire city. When he couldn’t find you, he probably resorted to this underhanded tactic-using public opinion to force you into the open.”
His eyes filled with self-reproach. “I’m sorry, Sophia. My
decision was too hasty. It brought this disaster on you. Can you forgive me?”

To show he cared? Even a fool wouldn’t believe that excuse.
The only possibility was that he still wanted to force her to apologize to Isabelle.
At the thought, that familiar, numbing ache in her chest flared up again.
She forced down the churning emotions and shook her head gently at Connor. “Connor, this isn’t your fault-they’re the ones in the wrong. I can tell the difference. I won’t blame you.”
Connor looked relieved, patting her shoulder gently. “Sophia, I know the truth can’t be as simple as they’re making it seem. We can’t just sit here and take this. We need to find a way to clear your name.”
“Think carefully-is there anyone in the Anderson family who could be a breakthrough point?”
