Chapter 68
“Ah!”
A cry of agony suddenly erupted from behind them.
Damian’s heart skipped a beat as he whipped around.
The man who had somehow managed to get back on his feet was now lunging at Sophia.
The knife in his hand had plunged deep into her calf.
Blood gushed instantly, staining her blue hospital gown crimson and spreading across the floor in dark pools.
Cold sweat beaded on Sophia’s forehead as pain drained all color from her face.
But in that moment, she grabbed a broken brick and slammed it against the man’s head with every ounce of strength she had left.
Crack! Blood streamed down his face as he collapsed.
Yet he still maintained his death grip on Sophia’s ankle, refusing to let go no matter how desperately she struggled.
Blood coating his face, the man looked up at Damian with a Maniacal grin.

“Damian… having such a beautiful girlfriend… she can die with
me…
“I won’t lose out on this deal, haha… Hope you… won’t regret
this…”
The flames roared higher, scorching heat radiating as thick smoke billowed around them.
Twisted steel beams crashed down from the ceiling with thunderous impacts.
The air grew thinner, making every breath a struggle.
Damian stood frozen, holding the unconscious Isabelle in his
arms.
He looked down at Isabelle in his embrace, then at Sophia- wounded and trapped by the man’s relentless grip.
He squeezed his eyes shut, his chest heaving with torment.
When he opened them again, his gaze held nothing but cold resolve.
Damian looked toward Sophia, his voice hoarse and breaking:
“Sophia, just hold on a little longer! Wait for me to get Isabelle

to safety-I’ll come right back for you! Trust me!”
Of course.
Between her and Isabelle, she would always be the one left behind.
Through the flames, Sophia raised her eyes to meet his.
In that moment, she felt strangely lucid-filled with the kind of peace that comes before release.
Using the last of her strength, she screamed back at him:
“Damian… you saved me once. Now we’re even.
“I hope you get everything you want. I hope you’re happy with her.”
Each word seared into his heart like a red-hot brand.
Damian’s entire body shook as if struck by a sledgehammer.
The next second, he spun around, clenched his jaw, and clutched Isabelle tighter.
At breakneck speed, he charged out of the factory doors without looking back.

Watching his resolute figure disappear completely beyond the flames, Sophia’s lips curved into a bitter smile.
Trust him?
How could she possibly?
Once, twice, three times-she’d lost count of how many times she’d been abandoned.
She’d known all along that there was never any place for her in
his heart.
Tears fell despite her efforts to stop them. Her wrist throbbed, her leg burned, but her heart hurt most of all.
Thick smoke filled her lungs as consciousness began to slip away, darkness closing in.
She slowly closed her eyes and lost consciousness completely.
Ten minutes later, Damian finally stumbled onto safe ground.
He handed the unconscious Isabelle to the bodyguards who rushed forward in panic.
“Watch her!” he commanded, not even pausing to catch his breath before turning to rush back to the factory.

BOOM!
A deafening crash thundered from behind.
The factory, overwhelmed by flames and exploding fireworks, collapsed in a spectacular ruin.
Shockwaves mixed with sparks and debris surged toward them.
The bodyguards quickly pulled Damian back several steps.
The flames cast an orange glow across Damian’s face as horror flooded his eyes.
“Sophia!” He screamed with everything he had, charging toward
the burning wreckage without regard for his safety.
“Mr. Hall! You can’t go in there—it’s too dangerous! Everything’s collapsed!”
The driver and bodyguards were terrified, grabbing him from behind with desperate strength.
“Let me go! My wife is still in there! Let me go!”
Damian’s eyes blazed with fury as he fought wildly, his fists striking anyone holding him back.
Sharp sirens wailed as fire trucks approached.

Soon, firefighters took control of the scene and began laying out hoses.
A fire chief blocked Damian’s path, speaking firmly. “Sir, please calm down. Move back to the safety zone and let our professionals handle the rescue.”
Damian grabbed the man’s arms with trembling hands, his voice shaking uncontrollably:
“Please! Save my wife-she’s still in there! She’s still in there!
Please!”
For the first time, New York City’s most distinguished young heir showed such complete breakdown in public.
But in that moment, he couldn’t care about anything else.
The chief nodded solemnly and patted his hands reassuringly.
Then he turned and led his team into the inferno without
hesitation.
Time crawled by, each second feeling like an eternity.
