Her Divorce, His Downfall (Sophia and Damian) novel Chapter 69

Chapter 69

He shook his head frantically, refusing to accept this conclusion. “No! It can’t be! She’s still in there! You’re lying to me-go back and look for her! She’s waiting for me!”

Damian tried to rush toward the smoking ruins, but the men beside him held him back with all their strength.

“Keep an eye on him. Do what you can to help him process this,” one of the firefighters instructed the bodyguards before he and his team began packing up their equipment and withdrawing from the scene.

Damian stood there like a man whose soul had been ripped away, his eyes hollow and vacant.

Her final words echoed endlessly in his mind:

“Damian… you saved me once. Now we’re even.

“I hope you get everything you want. I hope you’re happy with her.”

His heart felt like it was being torn apart by invisible claws, the pain so intense he could barely breathe.

“Will you marry me?”

“Yes! I will!”

“Honey, hold me.”

“You’re all grown up and you still want to be held?”

Each memory hit him like a physical blow.

Those tender moments were still so vivid, and now they were separated by death.

Damian clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles went white, feeling his organs twist together in agony. He could no longer contain the grief crushing his chest-he coughed up a mouthful of blood and collapsed.

“Mr. Hall…”

“Sir…”

“Get help, quickly…”

When Damian regained consciousness, the first thing he saw was Isabelle’s pale face hovering over his hospital bed. Her eyes were red and swollen-clearly, she’d been crying for hours.

The moment awareness returned, he clenched his fist until his 8

knuckles turned white.

For the first time, he questioned whether choosing Isabelle over his wife had been a mistake.

But the crushing pain in his chest didn’t lie. He felt so devastated he felt like he might die from it.

It was as if his very soul had been burned to ash in that fire.

“Damian, you’re finally awake.”

Seeing his eyes open, Isabelle forced a smile and rushed forward, grabbing his hand excitedly.

“Do you have any idea how terrified I was when you coughed up blood and collapsed? I was so afraid you might…”

She stopped mid-sentence, as if suddenly remembering something.

Wait-hadn’t she been unconscious in the warehouse? How would she know that he’d collapsed later?

Suspicion flickered in Damian’s mind, but he had no time to dwell on it.

He quickly pulled his hand away and sat up, looking at her with gesperate urgency.

“Any news about Sophia? What did the fire department say? Did they find her?”

Sophia. Always Sophia.

How is that bitch still haunting Damian even in death?

Despite cursing Sophia viciously in her mind, Isabelle kept her eyes red with tears streaming down her face.

“Liam told me that… that my sister didn’t make it out. She died

in the fire.

“I’m sorry, Damian. This is all my fault. If you hadn’t come to save me, my sister would never have died. I’m so sorry.”

With that, she dropped to her knees with a loud thud and began bowing violently, her forehead hitting the floor with sharp banging sounds. Within moments, her forehead was swollen and bleeding.

“Isabelle! What are you doing? Get up!”

Damian was shocked by her dramatic display. The suspicions that had just begun to form scattered now.

He quickly got out of bed to help her up, speaking gently.

“Isabelle, this was an accident. It’s not your fault.”

After all, she was Sophia’s younger sister and someone he was supposed to protect. She was also a victim of this senseless tragedy-how could he blame her for what happened?

If anyone was to blame, it was that kidnapper. And himself, for being ruthlessly decisive in business but leaving himself vulnerable to this fatal threat. Someone had dared to kidnap and murder his wife.

Thinking of that man, of the fire, of Sophia’s final look…

Damian’s chest burned with rage and regret. He regretted it so deeply he wanted to stab himself.

Had Sophia really died in that fire?

No. He refused to believe it.

The moment that thought formed, he ignored his weakened state and grabbed his phone from the bedside table, shouting in a voice so hoarse it was barely recognizable:

“Liam! Get in here!”

Liam entered to find Damian looking haggard but with blazing intensity in his eyes. His heart sank.
