Her Revenge Was His Regret (Shirley and Gilbert) novel Chapter 10

Chapter 10 An Apology That Earned a Slap

“Jean, you actually lied to my face? It seems you don’t want this job anymore.”

Gilbert’s expression darkened as if he’d been publicly shamed.

Wendy softened her voice. “Gilbert, it’s just some clothes. Don’t make your employees resent you over something so small. Everyone knows how much Jean has contributed to the company. Not like some people who never show any understanding and only think of themselves.”

As if Sherry was the unreasonable one.

“This is one of Jean’s jobs. I have every reason to believe she acted out of personal spite.”

Wendy looked genuinely hurt. “Sherry, you’re being unfair. Jean isn’t that kind of person. Did you consider the consequences of your blame? The entire industry will think she’s been embezzling…”

Using morality to pressure others worked every time. Disagreed? If you did, you were just being petty and stingy.

Sherry took a sip of wine. “Isn’t that exactly the point? If not, tell me why she would do this.”

Of course it was because Jean couldn’t stand her.

But Wendy didn’t dare say that in front of Gilbert.

Jean clenched her fists. “Fine, I’ll submit to an investigation! Let them see if I ever took a single cent that wasn’t mine. Even if the whole company laughs at me, I’ll clear my name!”

Gilbert remained silent-which everyone took as consent.

Jean felt utterly wronged. He hadn’t defended her. That b*tch Sherry must have poisoned his mind against

her.

The results came back quickly.

Jean was clean.

Under everyone’s hidden smirks, Jean blinked back tears but stood her ground. “Now will you apologize to me? I won’t accept being falsely accused.”

As if she were the victim here.

“Are you insane?” Sherry’s single question wiped the smirks off their faces. “Why would I care if you embezzle from this company? It’s not mine. I’m asking why you touched my couture. Gilbert gave those to me. Who gave you permission to lay a hand on my things?”

The crowd now stared at Jean like she was some jealous madwoman.

Was she crazy?

Tears welled in Jean’s eyes again. Why was Sherry picking on her like this? She hadn’t done anything wrong!

Wendy frowned and rushed to Jean’s defense. “Jean must have her reasons. We’re all women here. Do you really have to push her to despair? Sometimes you should reflect on what you did to make people target you. It takes two to-ah!”

Sherry’s slap landed before Wendy could finish.

The perfect face met the perfect slap-sharp, clean, and resonant.

Wendy covered her cheek, trembling with rage as tears fell.

Sherry moved even faster. “Make Jean apologize to me properly. Or, this isn’t over.”

Wendy fainted just as Sherry turned to leave.

Sherry had no intention of staying to watch the dramatic performance of Gilbert fussing over her.

Sure enough, Gilbert rushed to Wendy’s side, all tension and concern. Too bad no one was around to watch her performance. She’d practically fainted for nothing.

It only made her angrier.

The next day.

Designer clothes and custom pieces arrived in waves. Mary’s eyes widened in amazement.

“Oh my, these are all from luxury brands. Mr. Bode truly spoils you.”

Sherry glanced dismissively at the racks.

“This is just the basic standard. Nothing to do with spoiling. My empty closet before this? That was what made no sense.”

Her family wasn’t poor. She’d just fallen out of favor later. This level was the bare minimum from her previous life.

If anyone had seen her closet back in those days, they’d have been shocked.

When Gilbert returned home, Mary discreetly slipped away.

He offered a rare, cool smile-on a man who almost never smiled, it was enough to make hearts flutter. No wonder she’d once been blinded by it.

“From now on, tell me directly what you want. If you feel wronged, come to me.”

Sherry gave him a sidelong glance. “You think I didn’t try that before?”

She’d tried being gentle-asking him to keep some distance from Wendy, suggesting he come home earlier. He’d mistaken her softness for weakness.

And she knew he was intelligent. There was no way he hadn’t noticed those subtle protests.

He’d simply chosen to ignore them.

Gilbert let out a slow breath. Back then, he really had ignored her.

He’d assumed that she’d be understanding.

“She was young back then, not even an adult, so I looked after her more. Now she’s grown up. It’s time for her to be independent. We can finally live our lives properly.”

No one knew how long Sherry had waited to hear those words-waited for the day when Wendy would no longer stand between them.

But when it finally came, she felt no joy whatsoever.

Even though it was rare for a man like Gilbert to say such things, Sherry wanted nothing more from him.

“Too late. There have been too many disappointments. Like the boy who cried wolf-I just don’t care anymore.”

Gilbert took her hand. It was ice cold. His brow furrowed. “Why are your hands so cold? I’m sorry. I never asked if you were okay. I forgot you needed care too.

“Don’t worry about it. From now on, I’ll make it up to you. Everything on your wish list-I’ll make it happen. Yesterday’s meal doesn’t count. After you’ve blown off some steam, I’ll take you out for a great meal.”
