“Hope that’s true.” Lucas hung his head low.

Sherry could see his sharp jawline. She knew he had a mean presence-but he’d never turned it on her,

not once.

“Is your leg hurting? I’ll take you to the hospital right now.” He glanced at Gilbert at the end. “Looks like you already picked the girl next to you. Quit fretting over other people’s reputations-don’t be such a hypocrite.”

Gilbert saw them holding hands, fingers locked tight. He tried to yank his hand away, but Julia squeezed harder.

Gilbert saw the stubbornness in her eyes and let her keep holding him.

She’d just lost her husband-she needed comfort more than anybody. Sherry could get that.

When they walked past Wendy, Sherry hit her with the same line. “You think you won?”

Sherry finally clicked.

Everything Wendy had-she owed it all to Julia.

Wendy shook when she heard that. “Quit stirring the pot! Julia and I are tight! Besides, she’s married— you’re the one who lost, Sherry.”

But seeing their locked fingers and thinking about Julia’s dead husband, she panicked.

Will Julia really try to take Gilbert back?

Nah. I can’t think that way.

Sherry’s just trying to mess up mine and Julia’s vibe.

But when Lucas walked past Gilbert and Julia, he suddenly glanced at Julia.

Gilbert stepped in front of her, staring Lucas down like a madman.

His stance-his attitude-made it clear he was scared Lucas would hit on Julia. He was blocking other guys from checking her out.

If he didn’t love her, why be so touchy? He acted like he was her boyfriend, plain and simple.

It also showed how much Gilbert cared about her.

He didn’t even give Sherry a second thought.

Only Julia smiled. Even as her eyes dimmed, her face was blank-no one could read her.

She was probably every guy’s dream girl.

Pure face, hot body-and from a few words, you could tell she was sharp, not dumb at all.

No guy could say no to her.

Even after Sherry was with Gilbert for years, even after five years apart, Gilbert could put up with Wendy only because of Julia.

After today. Julia saved everyone. From now on, no matter what she did, at least everyone in Seaseat City -and some in King City-would cut her slack.

Just for that, everyone would wanna be her friend. If she really moved back, she’d be the talk of the town.

Will Lucas think that too?

Sherry tightened her arms around Lucas’s neck without realizing it.

Lucas spoke up outta nowhere, his deep voice oozing pressure. This lady’s something else. In 20 minutes flat, she chased off all the terrorists-like a national army.”

Everyone there was sharp. Those few words made them all side-eye her.

A flash of pain crossed Julia’s face, and she spoke softly. “Mr. Miller left me some guys to protect me before he passed.”

Gilbert told everyone, Yall know how good Mr. Miller was. I don’t know who you are, but doubting a lady who just lost her husband? That’s low.”

Gilbert’s words brought everyone back to their senses.

“Yeah, if it were anyone else, I might doubt them. But Mr. Miller’s guys? They’re unbeatable.

“For real. Mr. Miller was mysterious. Besides his wife Julia, nobody really knew him. Even though he’s gone, I’d never dare question him.”

Plain and simple-messing with someone like him was a bad move.

But that only went for small families.

The real powerful folks wouldn’t admit it-they had family pride to keep.

Today was embarrassing.

The guys they brought were no match for the terrorists-and definitely no match for Julia. Lucky for them, Julia was using “Mr. Miller’s name.
