They were still grabbing each other as they fell.
Sherry stood where Julia had been moments before and laughed out loud.
The sarcasm in her eyes made both of them turn purple with shame.
Getting kicked like that was humiliating. Even their butts burned.
Worse still, they both realized their first instinct had been to save themselves.
Their darkest selfishness had been laid bare for everyone to see.
Sherry turned and left without a word.
Gilbert awkwardly helped Julia up.
In a life-or-death moment, choosing yourself was only human.
Julia forced a weak smile—this time, it was real. She had been truly terrified.
"It's okay, Gilbert. It was just instinct. I'm sure if you'd had time to think, you would have saved me."
Gilbert relaxed immediately.
"Instinct is just instinct. You're the only one who matters to me."
So understanding. So kind.
He compared her to Sherry—if Sherry had fallen, she would have thrown a fit for days.
Julia's mouth tightened for a second, then she said softly, "This isn't your fault. It's all Sherry's fault for trying to kill us both."
Yes. Everything was Sherry's fault, kicking them down like that.
How could she hurt him?
She must have learned it from Lucas—she'd lost all her kindness.
Not a single good thing left about her. Just selfish and cruel.
The two foolish bodyguards were still standing at the door.
"Where's Sherry? She—" He paused. "I'm not done with her! Take her to the Bode Manor. Let my mom deal with her!"
Sherry had talked back to Lore at home, but at the Bode Manor, she'd be scared. His uncles and aunts were there too.
They'd split up once, but now they'd all been brought back.
They knew exactly how to break her.
The bodyguards stared blankly. "Didn't Sherry go upstairs with you?"
"You didn't see her come down?!"
Of course they didn't. The rooms were all connected. She must have escaped through another exit.
She knew she was wrong and ran away.
Then she turned her phone off.
She'd never hung up on him before. Now she left them stranded in this dangerous place, not caring if they lived or died.
Did Sherry really stop loving him?
Just as Gilbert was starting to realize the truth, Julia jumped in—whether Sherry was faking or not, this scene was dangerous for her.
"God, I'm the one who was humiliated. Can you believe I lost to Sherry at my own career? I came here just to calm down so I wouldn't drag you down with my mood.
"But Sherry threw a fit and abandoned us here. I know I shouldn't say anything... but this really is too much."
Gilbert snapped back to his senses immediately.
Right. That was all it was.
How could Sherry not love him?
She was just being a petty, annoying woman who didn't know when to quit.
Everyone turned to look at Julia. The question was obvious—how had she gotten here?
Julia couldn't admit she'd arrived in a nice, warm car. All that time pretending to be miserable in the wind would be wasted.
And after being kicked by Sherry, she had to sell the pitiful act to the end.
"I... walked here. I was just so upset..."
