But that was all so long ago. Why couldn't she just let it go?
Family—what did family mean? It meant looking out for each other and putting up with things.
Should he really tear everything apart over something so small? He'd only done what most men would do.
What else was he supposed to do? Drag everything out into the open and start an all-out war between both sides? Would that make anyone happy?
Sherry had only sacrificed a little. She'd done it before. A small sacrifice like that was worth keeping the peace.
From a businessman's perspective, it was more than a fair deal.
So Sherry was just being petty. And she wouldn't even admit it.
But now that Sherry knew he'd been aware the entire time, he still felt uneasy.
That same night, he bought a bouquet of flowers and knocked on her door.
He wanted Sherry to see that he was the kind of man who owned up to his mistakes.
He'd even tidied himself up nicely before coming.
He never expected Sherry to immediately try to slam the door in his face the second she saw him.
Gilbert blocked it without thinking.
"Sherry, I brought you flowers to apologize. What else do you want? I know I messed up, and I know you're mad. I'm saying I'm sorry, aren't I?"
His arrogant tone made it clear this was no real apology.
His frown was sharp enough to cut.
"I don't want an apology. I want payback for everything I went through."
Everything they did, Sherry wanted it all back.
Gilbert already knew exactly what they'd done.
"No!" he snapped immediately.
He had to stop her precisely because he knew.
"My mom's getting older. Cathy's still young—"
He always had an excuse. His heart was so biased that excuses rolled right off his tongue.
Sherry didn't care what he thought. She was going through with it no matter what.
Gilbert suddenly softened. "Sherry... I was wrong before. I'm sorry.
"If you just let this go, from now on, I'll keep my distance from every other woman. As for Julia—only work meals, nothing more. I'll spend all my time with you.
"If anything dangerous ever happens, you'll always come first. I'll protect you before anyone else."
He was probably thinking about the time he'd had to choose between them.
