His company had fought so hard to get where it was. He couldn't let it all fall apart and ruin his reputation because of Sherry.
It was a huge company with hundreds of employees. He couldn't just let all those people lose their jobs.
Sherry should understand which mattered more. But if something really happened...
She'd only throw another fit, saying he chose others over her.
Just like that time he'd had to choose.
The scene was chaotic, with so many people around, and somehow she was the one who got kidnapped.
If she'd just come back with him when he told her to, she never would have been kidnapped.
It never crossed his mind that if he hadn't dragged her over to talk in the first place, she never would have been taken.
He was a man, after all. He couldn't be petty like some women.
"If you're that unhappy," he said, "I'll prove it to you. I'll fix every last thing that's upsetting you.
"I'll make you happy, no matter what it takes.
"And if I do? You have no right to ask them to get hurt the same way you did."
"Happy?" Sherry looked him up and down, several times over.
Her whole expression screamed that she didn't believe him for a second.
Gilbert felt a flash of anger. Fine, let other things slide—but she didn't even trust him with this?
"Let me tell you something," he snapped. "Even that pick-one-of-two mess you hate the most? It'll never happen again. And if it ever does? I'll do exactly what you want. You'll always come first. How about that?"
He'd already made up his mind to win Sherry back.
If she stayed with Lucas, it would only bring bigger jokes down the line.
There wouldn't be any more pick-one-of-two, anyway. He wasn't scared of anyone else.
Nothing like that would ever happen on his territory.
He spoke with complete confidence, staring at her like she had no choice but to believe him.
"I don't believe you," Sherry said, looking straight into his eyes, each word cold and final.
Like she didn't believe in him at all.
"What's that supposed to mean? You don't trust me, but you trust Lucas?"
He saw that Sherry didn't even look disgusted at the sound of that man's name.
He was practically furious now.
"Sherry! How can you treat me like this? Where's your conscience? I just gave you my word—"
"Don't be so sure," Yelena said. "You've been through so much together all these years. You can't just erase those feelings.
"If he really changes, isn't that better than starting over with someone new and going through everything again...?"
Sherry flicked her lightly on the forehead.
Looks like this girl was already scared, convinced all men were the same.
"I'm saying a leopard can't change its spots. I don't believe he can change. Not at all. Nothing to do with anyone else. I just don't trust him.
"And I definitely don't believe I'll ever come first with him."
"Why not?" Yelena asked. "You chose him once. Even if he messed up bad... feelings are weird. You can't just erase the past."
Sherry stared out the window into the distance.
"You're right. I can't erase the past. But I'm not thinking about the good parts. I'm thinking about everything they did to me.
"The more I do, the more I regret ever knowing him.
"Don't you feel the same way? Hector's nothing but trash."
Yelena opened her mouth to reply, but before she could speak, someone outside shouted loudly.
"Oh my god! Did I just see dolphins?!"
