"Upset? You wish," Julia sneered. "You haven't even seen 10% of what I'm capable of."
She acted like Sherry was already defeated before she'd even tried.
"Doesn't look that way to me. You're clearly desperate. Nice act, though."
Sherry couldn't pinpoint why, but Julia seemed on edge.
Someone who always thought she'd win didn't act this anxious—not unless something was wrong.
"Shut up!" George roared. "Julia's nothing like your loud, petty self. She's a queen who stays in control, no matter what."
"Stop wasting your breath on her," Cathy said, grinning coldly at Sherry. "Some people don't deserve to live. The sooner they die, the better for everyone."
Sherry stepped back, putting distance between Yelena and the group.
These people meant trouble. She couldn't let Yelena get hurt.
Sure enough, George charged at her an instant later. Sherry punched him straight in the face.
Once, she'd been terrified of George—unpredictable, violent, ruthless.
She never thought she could hit him so easily.
The force twisted his face, and everyone froze in shock.
No one had expected Sherry to be that strong. They'd thought her fighting was just a bluff.
George collapsed, knocked out cold.
But then the floor under Sherry gave way, like the deck had rotted through.
She lost her balance and fell toward the lake.
All around her, people shouted Julia's name in unison.
Yelena's cry for Sherry was drowned out by the noise.
In the next second, Julia fell into the water ahead of Sherry.
"Julia!"
Gilbert's voice cut through the chaos.
"Gilbert!" Cathy cried out in fake panic. "Sherry knocked George out and tried to throw Julia in! When she saw you coming, she jumped on purpose!"
Julia clung to the railing. With a small twist of her leg, she could easily pull herself back onto the deck without a scratch.
Sherry, though, was in real danger. She gripped the edge weakly; if she let go, she would plunge into the cold lake.
Yelena leaned far over the side, straining to reach her, but she couldn't pull Sherry up.
Julia gave a weak, reassuring smile. "Gilbert, I'm okay. Really. I'm not afraid."
But the wind swept over, and her face turned even paler.
"I don't want to be the reason you two fight. It's fine. I can wait right here until you save her. Then you can come for me.
"I swear I'm fine."
Yelena's heart jumped with hope. She didn't care if it was an act. She just needed Sherry to be safe.
"She said she's fine! You promised you'd choose Sherry! Keep your word!"
"So you're using this to stir the pot, right? You're deliberately forcing a pick-between-two. Do you even know how scared Julia is of heights?"
Yelena stared at him, completely stunned.
"What are you talking about? This has nothing to do with Sherry! She's in real danger right now—can't you just pull her up first—"
Before she could finish, Gilbert rushed straight toward Julia.
He grabbed her tightly and said, "I just promised her less than an hour ago, and this happens. You expect me to believe Sherry had nothing to do with it?"
Yelena could barely believe what she was seeing and hearing.
What was wrong with him?
