After that, Sherry—who rarely went out with Gilbert anyway—stopped going out entirely.
Gilbert was more than happy with this arrangement, and his attitude toward her even softened a little.
She would never again put herself in a position where she felt embarrassed or foolish for caring too much.
Yeah, they'd posted a little online before, but both of them were strict about boundaries.
Most importantly, both of them were extremely busy. Lucas was often so tied up with work that she barely saw him.
That was when Sherry realized he truly needed a reliable assistant.
He wasn't joking or playing around. He formally taught her everything the job required.
That was when she saw just how outstanding Lucas was—so far out of her league that she felt she could never reach him.
She had never felt this way with Gilbert.
It was only later, from the way everyone treated her, that Sherry had begun to feel worthless, her pride trampled on.
This wasn't online, and there was no one else around to impress.
Sherry had no idea what he really thought.
What if his answer embarrassed her?
How could she face him afterward?
These thoughts flashed through her mind in an instant.
Then, in barely a second—
"Yes."
Lucas answered without hesitation.
No need to put on a show for others, no need to stand up for her publicly.
Lucas just admitted it.
Yelena's mouth fell open. Clearly he'd thought the same before.
She had assumed Lucas was defending Sherry for the sake of the company—they were both high-level figures, after all.
But here, alone in the car, there was no reason to lie.
And he still admitted it.
Yelena's curiosity exploded. Gossip always made her excited.
"If that's true... why did you leave without taking Sherry? You knew what Hector was like..."
Her voice trailed off at his name.
"I didn't just know. I had people investigate him as soon as this happened."
Sherry and Yelena exchanged panicked looks.
Hearing something like this in another powerful family would probably get them killed.
"I heard Max mention Irene before," Yelena said. "Why is she so powerful? But no one talks about her family."
If they were really that important, why was Irene's birth family unknown?
"Her family gave everything, including several lives, to build the Harrison family."
Sherry was stunned.
Gilbert had been willing to worship Julia because he owed her a debt.
If it had come down to choosing between her and Julia, Gilbert would have picked Julia without a second thought.
But Irene's family had sacrificed multiple lives for the Harrisons.
"You don't have to turn against your family's savior just for me," Sherry said quietly.
Anyone could see which debt was greater.
Gilbert had acted that way over Julia. What about Lucas?
Lucas' cold, handsome face twisted into a bitter, mocking smile.
"I owe them nothing. Even if there was a great debt—it's owed by the Harrison family, not by me. And certainly not by you."
