If you truly loved someone, you cared about their feelings. Otherwise, what did it matter if she was married to someone else? You'd fight to take her anyway, and she'd end up yours.
Sherry asked, "Are you a big deal around here? Do you have a lot of pull?"
Lucas nodded slowly. "Yeah. So much that handling the problems inside is tougher than dealing with the ones outside."
"What would you think about letting Julia find out I'm here?" Sherry suddenly grinned.
Mischief was practically dripping from her eyes. She looked like a clever little cat with a dangerous glint.
Lucas' mind didn't jump to anyone else—instead, he picked up on a different meaning behind her words. For a second, he wondered if he'd heard her right.
"You... want to stay?"
Disbelief and surprise washed over his face.
"You know..."
From day one, even when he hadn't made a move, Sherry should've realized this place wasn't exactly safe.
She could trust that her life wasn't in danger here.
But there were people who'd do anything to send her back to Virelia, and they'd definitely try to drive a wedge between her and Lucas.
And then there was the other side—they weren't simple either. If they worked for Julia...
Push them too far, and who knew if Julia might use them? Not that it was easy for her to do—people would notice.
Still, you had to be careful when you cornered an animal.
So yeah, it was risky.
"Lucas, nobody in this world really knows the real me." How much someone held back only showed how far they could go when they finally broke.
"Are your people tough?"
"Let's just say they've been through more than most. Not much scares them."
Most of them didn't come from easy backgrounds. They'd seen rough, bloody days early on and had gotten used to the storm.
Besides, they didn't put the women through the worst of it—physically, it just wasn't possible.
They knew about that life but hadn't lived it firsthand, though that still put them way ahead of people who'd never been tested.
Out of everyone here, only two women were willing to walk through fire alongside the men.
One was Gwen; the other was handling business elsewhere right now.
But that didn't mean women were weaker—their strengths lay somewhere else.
Either way, these people had earned their place. Nobody cut in line here.
The only way someone left was if they lost their nerve and decided they didn't belong.
"Then let's give it a shot."
Sherry's tone was casual, yet a faint blush crept up her cheeks the moment the words left her mouth.
Lucas picked up on it instantly.
