Chapter 320

Dinner turned out to be exactly what I needed. It was chaotic, loud, and overflowing with love. Nate’s large dining table had more than enough room for all nine of us, yet everyone chose to sit close together anyway, creating an intimate, cozy atmosphere. Pizza boxes covered the center of the table alongside open bottles of wine, plates with leftovers from the Valentian appetizers Nate had ordered, and half-full glasses that were constantly being refilled.

Conversations overlapped in a familiar symphony of animated voices. Matthew was in the middle of a hilarious story about a cultural misunderstanding he’d experienced in the Imperial City, gesturing so wildly he nearly knocked over his wine glass twice. Oliver and Sarah were laughing to the point of tears at something Christian had said about the quirks of doing business in Verdania. Zoey and Gwen were whispering about some piece of gossip that almost certainly involved someone from Valentian high society.

Tori was completely in her element, asking questions about everyone’s lives and absorbing every detail as if she were mentally cataloging it all for future use. Nate moved around the table like a natural host, making sure everyone had enough food and that the conversations flowed effortlessly.

I found myself watching it all with a deep sense of contentment. There was something magical about seeing such different worlds blend so naturally-my warm, loud Verdanian family, the more reserved but equally affectionate Brits, and Gwen bringing her effortless Valentian elegance. It felt like all these people from such different cultures had always belonged in my life.

“Annie, you’re very quiet,” Zoey noticed at one point, gently nudging me. “Are you okay?”

“I’m just… taking all of this in,” I said honestly, gesturing toward the table full of people I loved. “It’s surreal- in a good way.”

Christian raised his wine glass.

“A toast,” he announced, and the conversations slowly quieted. “To family. Blood or not, everyone here proved today that family is about showing up when someone needs you.”

“To family,” everyone echoed, and we clinked glasses in a chaotic chorus of laughter and crystal.

As the night went on, the inevitable goodbyes began. Oliver was the first to mention that they needed to leave.

“Unfortunately, we’ve got a long drive back to Bath,” he said, checking the time.

“Can I hitch a ride?” Tori asked immediately. “That’d be perfect.”

“Of course,” Sarah replied warmly. “The more, the merrier.”

Tori stood and kissed Nate on the cheek.

“Don’t forget I’ll be back in London on the sixth,” she said with a mischievous smile. “I’ve got that interview Annie got me.’

Nate rolled his eyes dramatically.

“Sure. Like I even need to tell you to stay here. You always do anyway,” he teased in that familiar big-brother

tone.

“At least I warn you before invading your house,” Tori shot back. “Unlike when you used to show up at my apartment and eat all my food.”

“I brought food too!” Nate protested, laughing.

“Store-bought sandwiches don’t count as food, Nathaniel,” Tori replied with mock solemnity.

The three of them left amid laughter and promises to stay in touch. The house immediately felt quieter without Oliver and Sarah’s vibrant energy and Tori’s naturally animated presence.

Gwen was the next to say goodbye, but in a much more subdued way.

“I’m going to stay in London for now,” Gwen said as she picked up her bag. “If you need a friend, you know where to find me.”

She exchanged a meaningful look with Matthew that didn’t go unnoticed by anyone at the table. There was something there… a quiet intimacy that hinted at private conversations and maybe feelings neither of them had put into words yet.

Matthew didn’t even wait a full minute after Gwen left before announcing:

“Well, I’m heading out too!”

He kissed Zoey and me goodbye, shook hands’ with Christian and Nate, and practically sprinted for the door.

“They’re not even trying to hide it,” Christian muttered, shaking his head with amusement.

Christian and Zoey stayed a little longer for one last cup of coffee, settling onto the living room sofa in their naturally entwined way. Watching them together always warmed my heart, the way Christian automatically shifted so Zoey would be more comfortable, how she absentmindedly played with the buttons of his shirt while they talked.

“How long are you staying in London?” I asked, secretly hoping they’d say a few days.

“We’re flying back tomorrow morning,” Zoey replied with a sigh. “I left Matt with my mother-in-law and the nannies, but… I already miss my baby.”

“I was even thinking of using the trip to handle a few Kensington things,” Christian added, “but Zoey can’t be away from Matt for long and I-” he looked at her with pure, unfiltered love, “I can’t be away from her.”

“Aww,” Zoey made a soft, exaggerated sound and kissed him right there, a deep, affectionate kiss that made the rest of us politely look away.

“At least we’ve got the whole night alone!” she said to me with a wink when they pulled apart.

“Have fun, but be careful,” I teased. “Matt’s a little young to get a sibling already.”

Zoey blushed, and Christian laughed out loud, clearly not bothered by the implication at all.

When the last guest finally left and Nate closed the door behind them, the house felt strangely quiet after hours of laughter and overlapping conversations.

“That was… a lot,” Nate said, leaning back against the closed door. “Your family really loves you.”

“I know,” I replied, my eyes shining with emotion. “And yours isn’t far behind.”

“I know,” he said softly, smiling.

I stood there for a moment, letting the feeling sink in, of being home. Not just in Nate’s house, but home in the deepest sense of the word. Surrounded by love. Safe. Chosen. Valued. That was what I wanted, not just for emergencies or special occasions, but for ordinary, everyday life.

I looked straight into Nate’s eyes and saw all the affection and hope I knew were reflected in my own.

“I want this,” I said with absolute certainty. “I want a place for us, a place where we can welcome this chaos whenever they want to visit. I want to live with you.”
