Hired a Gigolo Got a Billionaire (Zoey and Christian) novel Chapter 638

Chapter 638

Nicholas’ POV

I was fixing the fence near the barrel storage when I heard the unmistakable sound of a car coming up

the dirt road.

I wasn’t expecting anyone.

I set the hammer down on the old wood, wiped my grease- and dirt-stained hands on my already ruined jeans, and walked toward the front of the estate, squinting against the afternoon sun.

The car stopped near the main entrance, kicking up a cloud of dust that took its time settling.

Renee stepped out of the driver’s side.

My jaw locked instantly. The muscles in my neck tightened on their own.

“You shouldn’t be here,” I said before she even had the chance to speak.

She closed the car door with exaggerated care and adjusted her purse slowly.

She looked… off. Not her usual sharp, combative self. Nervous? Hesitant? I couldn’t quite place it, but something was wrong.

“Nick, I need to talk to you,” she began, her voice softer and more controlled than I expected.

“We have absolutely nothing to talk about,” I cut in immediately, crossing my arms. “I thought I made that clear when I blocked you everywhere. And when I deliberately ignored all your pathetic attempts to reach me.”

“I know you’re angry with me…”

“Angry?” I let out a humorless laugh. “Angry isn’t even close to what I feel for you right now.”

She took a breath, visibly steadying herself. Like she was holding words back. Weighing something.

Which was suspicious all by itself.

Renee never weighed anything.

“Look, I understand your position,” she said eventually, choosing her words carefully. “And maybe… maybe I overdid it. With some of the things I said. Some of the threats.”

I raised an eyebrow, genuinely incredulous.

Renee admitting she overreacted? That she was wrong? That was new.

And immediately suspicious.

“What do you actually want?” I asked bluntly. “Because I know you didn’t drive all the way here just to apologize.”

She opened her mouth like she was going to answer right away. Then closed it. She seemed to debate something internally for a few long, uncomfortable seconds.

She looked at the dirt ground. At her car. At the property around us. Anywhere but at me.

Her hands fidgeted with the strap of her purse.

“Listen,” she finally said, her voice different now. Less controlled. Less rehearsed. “I was driving here

from Florentia… there was a serious accident.”

I frowned, confused by the sudden shift.

“An accident?”

“Yes,” she continued quickly, the words spilling faster now. “A huge truck… hit a smaller car. Or actually, I think the car hit while trying to swerve away from the truck. I’m not sure. It was horrible. Ambulances, police, fire trucks, the whole road blocked off.”

I waited for her to get to the point.

“And?” I pressed when she paused too long.

Renee looked at me directly now for the first time since she’d arrived.

“And… I think it was Gwen’s car,” she said slowly.

Something cold and heavy slid down my spine.

“What?”

“The car was completely destroyed,” she repeated, speaking too carefully. “It looked a lot like hers. But there was too much chaos, too many people. I couldn’t get close enough to confirm. I just… thought your should know.”

I stood still, my mind racing.

Gwen had texted earlier saying she was at the office all day. Important meetings.

But she had also sent that strange voice message a few hours ago.

“Don’t believe anything your ex tries to tell you, okay? Nothing. I need to talk to you first. I’m on my way

there now.”

I looked at Renee, suspicion rising fast.

“I don’t know what you’re trying to pull with this,” I said, my voice hard but steady. “But with you, there’s always something underneath. Always a game. Always a lie.

“There’s no game this time,” she insisted, but her eyes slid away. “I’m just telling you what I saw on the road.”

“Oh, really?” I challenged, stepping closer. “Then why didn’t you stay there? Why didn’t you help? Why

didn’t you wait for the ambulance and confirm whether it was her before coming here to tell me this

story?”

Renee didn’t answer.

She just stood there, avoiding my eyes.

“Gwen warned me,” I continued, each word heavy. “She told me not to believe a single thing you said. And you know what, Renee? She was absolutely right about you.”

I saw it happen.

Something shifted in her face. The concerned mask dropped completely.

“That arrogant, self-righteous cow,” she muttered with venom, more to herself than to me, but loud enough that I heard every word.

“Get out of here,” I ordered, pointing straight at her car. “Now.”

She stood there for a long, tense moment, staring at me with a mix of fury and frustration.

“Fine,” she said at last, her voice too controlled. She turned slowly toward her car. “Fine, Nick. I’ll leave like you want.”

She opened the driver’s door and tossed her purse onto the passenger seat without care.

Got in. Slammed the door.

Started the engine.

For a second, I thought she was actually going to leave. Just go. No final jab. No last word. Just for a

second.

Then she rolled down the window and looked at me again, that strange, dangerous expression back in

full force.

“But remember this, Nick,” she said, her tone far too casual to be natural. “I tried to be nice today. To you and to her. I gave you a chance. I warned you about the accident. I tried to do the morally right thing for

once.”

She paused deliberately, locking her eyes on mine.

“Now I’m done being nice to either of you. You’ll deal with the consequences of your stupid choices.”

She started reversing slowly.

Then stopped again.

Turned her head and looked at me one last time through the open window.

“Oh, and by the way, Nick,” she added, her voice dangerously calm, “Gwen Kensington bought your debt for 2.3 million dollars. She’s your new official creditor. Congratulations.”
