Chapter 639
Nicholas’ POV
Renee’s car disappeared down the road, kicking up a cloud of dust, and I just stood there like an idiot.
Her words kept echoing in my head.
“Gwen Kensington bought your debt for 2.3 million dollars.”
No..
I wasn’t going to do this.
I wasn’t going to believe a single word that came out of that woman’s mouth.
Gwen had warned me. She told me not to believe anything Renee said. Not one word.
I might not know exactly what Renee was trying to accomplish with that whole story, but she was definitely trying to accomplish something. She always was.
I took a deep breath and dragged both hands through my hair.
Then I walked back to the fence and picked up the hammer again.
‘Focus,’ I told myself. Just focus on the job.
I lined up the nail and raised the hammer.
But my hands were trembling.
I tried again. The nail went in crooked.
“Shit,” I muttered, yanking it out and starting over.
It was pointless.
Just because I chose to ignore something didn’t mean my brain would magically stop worrying about it. That wasn’t how it worked.
Gwen had also said she was coming. That she was on her way here.
I glanced at the watch on my wrist.
If she’d left when she sent that voice message, she should’ve been here by now.
She should’ve arrived at least half an hour ago.
I dropped the hammer again and pulled my phone out of my pocket.
I called her.
It rang. And rang. And rang.

Voicemail.
I stared at the screen for a few seconds, debating whether to text her.
I decided against it. If she wasn’t answering calls, she probably wouldn’t answer a message either.
I shoved the phone back into my pocket and went back to the fence.
I tried to focus. I really did.
Fifteen minutes later, I gave up.
I grabbed my phone again and called her.
Straight to voicemail this time.
Was her phone off now? Or dead?
Something tightened in my chest. A mix of worry and frustration.
Where was she?
Why wasn’t she answering?
Renee’s ridiculous story about the accident crept back into my mind without permission.
“I think it was Gwen’s car.”
No. It wasn’t true. Just another one of her pathetic manipulations.
But… what if it wasn’t?
What if something really had happened?
I shook my head hard, forcing the thought away.
Renee was lying. She had to be.
But the worry wouldn’t leave.
I dropped the tools for good and walked back toward the main house.
I stepped through the kitchen door.
My mom was there, cooking something that smelled like tomato sauce.
She looked at me and immediately frowned.
“Is everything okay?” she asked, wiping her hands on her apron. “You look pale.”
“I’m fine,” I lied automatically. “Just… tired.”
She didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t push.

“Do you want me to make you something to eat?”
“No, thanks,” I said, already heading up the stairs. “I’m just going to… lie down for a bit.”
I went into my bedroom and closed the door behind me.
I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the phone in my hands.
I needed to talk to Gwen. Now.
If she wasn’t answering her cell, maybe she was still at the office. Maybe her battery had died.
I opened my browser, searched for the number of Kensington’s Florentia headquarters, and called before I could change my mind.
A professional female voice answered on the third ring.
“Kensington Florentia, good afternoon.”
“Good afternoon,” I said, forcing my voice to stay steady. “I’d like to speak with Gwen Kensington, please.”
“Do you have an appointment? Is Miss Kensington expecting your call?”
I closed my eyes and took a slow breath, trying to keep my irritation in check.
“No. But it’s urgent. Personal.”
“I’m sorry, sir, but Miss Kensington does not take calls without a prior appointment. I can take your name and-”
“Just tell me if she’s there,” I cut in, frustration bleeding into my voice. “Please, I just need to know if
she’s at the office.”
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds.
“May I ask who’s calling?”
“Nicholas Valemont.”
More silence. I could hear typing in the background.
“Mr. Valemont, Miss Gwen canceled all of her appointments for today and will not be returning to the office.”
My stomach clenched.
“Canceled? When? Was it a while ago?”
“I don’t have that information, sir. May 1-”
“That’s fine,” I interrupted. “Thank you.”

I hung up before she could say anything else.
Canceled all her appointments.
Not returning to the office.
Was that good or bad?
Good, because it meant she really had been on her way here like she said.
But then… where was she?
Why hadn’t she arrived yet?
Why was her phone off?
The worry was shifting into something worse.
Panic started creeping in, slow and cold.
I stood and began pacing across the small bedroom.
I grabbed my wallet from the nightstand and opened it.
Christian’s card was still there. White. Minimalist. Just his name and two numbers.
Office and personal.
He’d handed it to me the day we met to discuss business. “If you need anything, call.”
I held the card between my fingers, debating.
Maybe it was nothing. Maybe Gwen had stopped somewhere. Maybe her phone really had died.
I didn’t want to bother Christian on his personal number over nothing. Over my own paranoia.
I slid the card back into my wallet.
But I didn’t put the wallet away. I just stood there, holding it, staring at my phone.
Call. Don’t call. Call. Don’t call.
I was starting to feel ridiculous when my phone rang in my hand.
I nearly dropped it..
I answered before even looking at the screen, my heart slamming against my ribs.
“Gwen?”
“Nick?” a voice said on the other end.
Not Gwen.

A man.
“Yes,” I replied, confused.
“Dante Kensington,” he said. And there was something in his tone that made my blood run cold. “You
