Chapter 669
Gwen’s POV
I thought that after the civil ceremony, I’d want silence.
A dark room. A hot shower. Nick completely to myself, no noise, no questions, no world trying to turn our life into a caption.
But Zoey had other plans. And when Christian and Martina showed up with us at the entrance of the club, I understood why.
The place was closed for family and friends only. No strangers. No cameras. No press. At the door, a security guard I didn’t recognize somehow recognized me anyway and gave us a subtle nod to let us in.
Inside, it felt like someone had built a capsule of joy in the middle of chaos.
Low lights. Good music. Food moving around on trays. A fully open bar.
I still wasn’t used to the words that now clung to me.
Pregnant.
Wife.
Future.
Bella wasn’t there. At that hour she was at school, and honestly, we thought it was better that way. The word “marriage” still had thorns in her mind. I didn’t want her first real experience with it to be a packed room, loud music, and people shouting congratulations.
I wanted it to come gently. With honesty. With safety.
But in that moment, I needed something else too. Proof that I wasn’t alone on the exposed side of this life.
And I wasn’t.
Annie and Nate were leaning near the bar, carrying that effortless London elegance that doesn’t wrinkle, not even after a long flight. Matthew stood with them, shirt unbuttoned at the collar.
Marcus and Madeline arrived with full energy, hugging everyone like affection was their national language. Mia was already there with Dante and Paula, Paula wore the permanent smile of someone who knew things. Dante had that posture of “I’m going to pretend this is all completely normal because I’m the responsible adult here,” but his eyes gave away how emotional he actually was.
On Nick’s side, a few friends from Montelira had claimed a small table. Easy laughter. Heavy hands clapping shoulders People calling my husband by nicknames I was still learning to hear without feeling surprised.
And then something happened that I couldn’t explain.
I felt loved.
Not in a dramatic way. Not like in a movie,
In a physical way.
Like the air around me had turned lighter simply because those people had crossed oceans, time zones, and commitments to be there. For us. For me.
Zoey appeared out of nowhere, flawless as always, and grabbed my shoulders with both hands.
“I am not accepting any ‘I’m about to cry’ face tonight,” she warned.
“I’m not crying,” I lied.

She arched one eyebrow and gave me a small shove.
“Go Enjoy it. And remember, no speeches.”
I laughed. A real laugh.
At some point the music got a little louder. People dancing. Glasses clinking. The night moving like the world didn’t have a scheduled hearing and lawyers waiting for a crack in our armor.
I was in the middle of a conversation with Maite about “how do you people survive without beans” when Zoey suddenly appeared holding a bunch of flowers. Loose stems tied together with ribbon. An improvised bouquet
“Okay,” she announced. “Yes, I ordered it. Don’t look at me like that. I needed something minimally traditional so you could have one happy mental picture, Gwen.”
“Zoey…”
“No arguing.” She nudged me toward the center of the room.
I turned my back to everyone. My heart beat in a strange rhythm. It wasn’t superstition. It was just the weight of symbols.
I threw it without counting. No “one, two, three.” Just sudden. My way.
I heard a collective gasp. A scramble of hands. The bouquet vanished for a second.
When I turned around, Mia was the one holding the flowers.
She gripped them like they might explode. Looked at me. Looked at Zoey. Then made the tiniest, almost offended face.
“I caught it on reflex,” she said, lifting the bouquet like evidence. “Reflex. It doesn’t mean anything.”
“It means destiny!” Anne shouted from across the room.
“It means I have motor coordination,” Mia shot back dryly, earning another round of laughter.
I suddenly felt like I could hug the entire world.
Nick appeared beside me and slipped his arm around my waist. Simple. Solid.
“You okay?” he asked softly near my ear.
I nodded, and the truth moved straight through me.
“I’m…” I paused, because I couldn’t find a better word. “Happy.”
He kissed my hair quickly, like he didn’t want to draw attention to something intimate.
“That’s what matters,” he said.
I wanted to stay there forever, in that slice of night where no one could hurt us.
Put the bar called my name.
I reached the counter at the exact same time as Matthew.
The timing was so perfect f almost laughed.
He ordered something over ice. I rested my hands on the edge of the bar and studied the menu like I was still the woman I used
to be.
“So it’s juice for you now, huh?” he teased with that crooked smile.
A sound came out of me that was half laugh, half sigh.

“I don’t know how I’m going to survive nine whole months of this.”
Matthew leaned his elbow on the bar and looked at me in a way I knew far too well.
“Guess that’s the only way to make the girl who thought wine held couples together slow down,” he said lightly.
I shrugged.
“With me and Nick… it did.”
There was a silence.
Not big. Not dramatic. But enough for the past to flicker between us like a poorly stored photograph. Stolen kisses.
Conversations that almost turned into promises. The feeling that I always had one foot out the door.
Matthew laughed first, breaking the tension.
“You know I’m genuinely happy for you, right?”
I looked into his eyes. And for a second, the Gwen I used to be before the accident, the one who ran when she was loved, tried to
lift her head.
But I didn’t let her.
“I know,” I said. “I always knew you were… perfect enough for that.”
He shook his head, like the word bothered him.
“It’s not about perfection.”
“But you are,” I insisted. “You always were.”
My throat tightened, and I hated that. Emotion made me vulnerable. Vulnerable made me defensive.
Still, I kept going.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t…” I searched for the right way to say it. “I think I had to lose my memory and lose myself… to finally find something solid inside me. And Nick… he was there.”
Matthew looked down for a second. Then back up, calm in a way that made me want to apologize all over again.
“Right place, right time,” he finished quietly.
I nodded.
“And you deserve someone who loves you completely,” I said. No decoration. No clichés. Just the truth.
He smiled, and it didn’t hurt the way I thought it would.
“And you deserve all the happiness in the world,” Matthew replied.
Before stepping away, he brushed his fingertips against my cheek and pressed a quick kiss there. No possession. No insistence. Just… closure.
And at that exact moment, Zoey appeared at my side.
She wasn’t smiling.
Her hand gripped my arm, too firm to be casual.
“Listen,” she said quietly near my ear. “Don’t freak out. But we have a problem.”
