Chapter 670

Gwen’s POV

My head exploded before Zoey even finished the sentence.

Problem.

That word was a key. It unlocked every door I’d been trying to keep shut. Bella. Renee. The hearing. Gossip. Leaks. The kind of tragedy that shows up uninvited.

My whole body went rigid.

“What?” I asked, my heart already racing. “What happened? Is it Bella?”

Zoey blinked like I’d just skipped twenty chapters.

“No. No!” She grabbed my arm again, almost laughing. “Relax. It’s nothing like that.”

“Then just say it,” I demanded, hating the edge in my own voice.

Zoey inhaled with ridiculous solemnity, like she was about to announce a war. Then, with the seriousness of someone confessing a crime, she said:

“The cake… it’s not the right chocolate. It’s not your favorite.”

I stared at her.

One second.

Two.

Until reality clicked back into place.

“You…” I started, and the sentence died because I burst out laughing. A real laugh. The kind that hits so suddenly it almost makes you dizzy. “You pulled me over for that?”

Zoey crossed her arms, playfully offended.

“I have a PR reputation to maintain. If the chocolate is wrong, I’ve failed as a human being.”

I rested my forehead against her shoulder for a second and hugged her tight, like I was holding on to a version of myself that still knew how to breathe without fear.

“Sis,” I murmured, “if all my problems were like this, I’d be the happiest person alive.”

Zoey softened in my arms.

“Tonight, they can be,” she said quietly.

I pulled back just enough to look at her.

“Tonight, they will be,” I answered.

I kissed her cheek quickly, like my happiness needed to touch someone to become real.

I grabbed my juice from the bar and forced myself to do what I’d promised. Socialize without overthinking. Thank people without crying. Exist without bracing for the next hit.

I moved from group to group like I’d been trained for it.

And then I saw Annie.

She was standing by a tall table, talking to a friend from my office, laughing with her head slightly tilted like the world weighed less when she decided it did.

I walked over and hugged her without asking.

“You came,” I whispered in her ear, like I was still surprised.

“I wouldn’t have missed this even if you tried to stop me,” she said, her voice smiling.

Nate stepped up beside her and hugged me too. And I had this quick flash of London. The three of us in a glass conference room. Bad coffee. Spreadsheets. Me thinking my future was nothing more than that.

And now I was here. A ring on my finger. Juice in my hand. Nick’s last name somewhere on my horizon.

When it was just the two of us, I looked at Annie with the kind of closeness that didn’t need ceremony.

“So… any marriage advice?” I asked. “I feel like I just dove headfirst into something I know absolutely nothing about. And it’s kind of terrifying.”

Annie laughed, and her eyes lit up.

“The best advice is to know absolutely nothing,” she said easily. “That way you’ll have to learn every day. And trust me, Gwen…

there’s nothing better than that.”

I nodded, my throat tightening for a second.

“You say that like it’s easy,” I teased.

“I say that as someone who almost loses her mind every day being married to Nathaniel,” Anne replied, lifting her glass. “And still feels like the happiest woman in the world.”

I lifted mine too.

And that’s when I looked.

Really looked.

And almost screamed.

“Wait!” I blurted, a little too loud. “Your drink… is that juice?”

Annie’s eyes widened and she immediately put a finger to her lips.

“Shh,” she hissed, laughing and panicked at the same time. “For the love of God.”

I clapped a hand over my mouth, shocked, laughing.

“Annie…” I whispered now, conspiratorial. “Annie!”

She took a deep breath, like she had to admit something huge without exploding.

“Nate doesn’t know yet,” she said quietly, “I want it to be special when I tell him.”

My chest tightened. I looked at her like there was a new kind of light on her face.

“You…?”

Anne nodded, and for a second she looked so human I could’ve cried.

“Isn’t it crazy?” she went on, her voice filled with soft amazement. “We went through IVF, the adoption waiting list… we have two beautiful kids and a perfect little dog and now…”

“Natural?” I asked, barely believing it.

Anne nodded again, her eyes shining with held-back tears.

“Almost a miracle.”

I set my glass down and hugged her tight, like I could press a piece of my heart into her life.

“Congratulations,” I whispered into her ear. “Congratulations, my love.”

Annie squeezed me back and laughed softly into my hair.

“Congratulations on the wedding,” she replied, like she was reminding me my world had just turned upside down too.

I took a breath and pulled back slowly.

“Tonight we’re collecting miracles,” I said, trying to joke so I wouldn’t fall apart.

Annie smiled.

“Tonight we leave the world outside,” she agreed.

The music shifted to something slower, and I spotted Nick across the floor. He was talking to Christian and Paula, but when he saw me, his face did that thing that always undid me. It softened. Like seeing me really was his safe place.

I walked over without thinking.

Nick opened his arm and pulled me onto the dance floor like it was second nature.

I leaned into him and, for a minute, everything was simple. Hands. Warmth. His familiar scent. A heartbeat close to mine.

“I can’t believe all these people came,” I murmured against his neck.

“They came because they love you,” he replied, like it was obvious. “And because they like me too, okay?”

I laughed.

“You’re unbearable tonight.”

“Married to the woman I love.” He smirked. “I’m allowed to be unbearable.”

I lifted my head to look at him and saw the happiness there. Real. Whole. Unposed. The kind of joy that comes from someone who’s taken hits and still chose to stay.

“Thank you,” I said simply.

Nick tightened his hand at my waist, careful.

No, thank you.”

We danced a little longer, and I let my head rest on his shoulder.

Then, close to my ear, in the lowest voice he had, Nick asked, “Are you dying to go home too?”

I lifted my head slowly and smiled, feeling warmth rise inside me.

“I’m dying to go home too,” I answered.

And I kissed him with every bit of intention.
