Chapter 731
Gwen’s POV
The road to the estate felt shorter than it really was.
Maybe because this time, no one was heading there in a rush to escape something.
Nick drove with both hands steady on the wheel, eyes sharp, but his body no longer carried that hospital tension. This was different. A quieter kind of pressure. The kind that comes with bringing something fragile into a place that has to learn how to
be home.
Clara slept in my arms, wrapped in soft fabric, her lips slightly parted like even breathing was still new to her. I watched her constantly, like my eyes were her personal security system.
In the front seat, Bella had climbed into Nick’s lap at the last second before we got out of the car, stubborn and clingy in that way only a happy child can be. He didn’t complain. Just wrapped an arm around her and held her like it was natural to carry one daughter against his chest and another in his wife’s arms.
When we stopped in front of the house, no one spoke for a moment.
The restored façade carried that quiet dignity of something built with care. The late afternoon light hit the stone, and the windows reflected the sky like they were giving back everything they had taken in over the past months.
Nick stepped in first, just enough to reach the handle from the inside and hold the door open.
“Welcome home,” he said.
I laughed, because the words were simple-and somehow, they were everything.
I walked past him with Clara in my arms and noticed the scent of the house in a way I never had before. New wood mixed with old stone. Fresh cleaning. And beneath it all, a faint trace of earth drifting in from outside.
I went straight to the living room window, like I needed to introduce the world to my daughter.
“See those rows of vines?” I whispered to Clara, even though she couldn’t understand. “That’s where your dad’s going to make you eat your first grape.”
Bella lit up.
“And I’m going to teach her how to ride a bike and eat gelato,” she announced, like she’d already built a full schedule.
Nick let out a soft laugh.
“One step at a time, miss,” he said.
We went upstairs slowly
Nick walked ahead, opening doors and adjusting things carefully, like the house might trip over us it he wasn’t gentle. I followed behind, feeling the good weight of Clara and Bella practically glued to my leg, trailing me like I was a map
When we stepped into the bedroom, the crib was there
Thad seen it in pictures 1 had stood in that room before. Thad imagined it a thousand times
And still, seeing, that crib with my daughter in my arms changed the air
Nick moved closer first.
He looked at Clara with something close to reverence.
I stepped up to the crib and gently laid her down.

She shifted a little, made the smallest sound, then went still again.
The three of us just stood there, watching.
Bella came up on her tiptoes, respecting the silence like she instinctively understood this was a moment that called for quiet.
“She really fits in there,” Bella whispered, amazed, like the concept itself was still unbelievable.
Nick rested a hand on my waist.
I felt his body slowly relax, like only then did he believe our daughter was truly safe.
We stayed there, just looking at her.
For a minute.
Maybe less.
And then my body made its demands.
The exhaustion hit like a slow, heavy wave. My back ached. My head begged for a bed with almost ridiculous urgency.
I looked at the crib and at Clara.
And accepted the truth without trying to dress it up.
“Who am I kidding?” I murmured.
Nick looked at me, confused.
I held out my arms, and he laughed.
He picked Clara up carefully and placed her back in my arms like he’d been doing it his whole life.
I lay down on the bed with Clara against my chest, feeling her warmth, her light weight, the rhythm of her breathing.
Bella climbed up right after.
No asking, No hesitation She settled in the middle of the bed like it had always been her place. She rested her head on my shouder, watching her sister with quiet fascination.
Mick came last
He closed the door gently, turned off the main light, left only the bedside lamp on, and got into bed with the calm of someone wis bad finally been given permission to stop.
1 turned my head and saw the nightstand
There was a bottle there
Elegant Label. The name that had come from his land and gone out into the world
Valemond by Kensington

“Isn’t it a little early to be putting wine in Clara’s bottle?” } teased
Nick laughed, that deep laugh that starts in his chest.
“That’s for us,” he said. “For the first night she sleeps through”
I laughed with him, because the idea was simple and perfect.

Bella raised her hand like she was asking to speak.
“I can tell her a bedtime story,” she said.
I looked at her, curious.
“Oh yeah? What story?” I asked.
Bella thought for a moment, serious like she was choosing something very important.
“The story of the princess who loses her memory and marries a farmer,” she said.
Nick and I laughed at the same time.
He turned to her.
“And what happens?” he asked.
It was my voice that answered before I even thought about it.
“Life happens,” I said. “And it’s a beautiful life.”
Bella nodded, satisfied, like that settled everything.
“And they all live happily ever after.”
