Cayden sighed helplessly and explained, “My son is just a regular doctor–he’s really not on Iris‘ level. We wouldn’t even dream of suggesting something like that.”
Brandon frowned. “Dad, do you have to talk about your own son that way?”
Cayden lifted his chin defiantly. “What? Was I wrong?”
Brandon let out a long breath. “No… you’re right.”
Everyone in the room chuckled.
Iris felt a little awkward but kept a polite smile on her face.
“Dad,” Brandon said, “Iris and I have something we’d like to go over with you. Can we talk in the lounge?”
The moment Cayden heard it involved Iris, he agreed right away. He apologized to his friends and asked them to wait, then followed Brandon and Iris into the cozy adjoining lounge.
The space was tastefully decorated, with the gentle scent of sandalwood drifting in the air. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wrapped around them, soothing and calming.
Once they were seated, Brandon began pouring coffee. Then he brought out a storage box and placed it on the low table between them.
“What’s all this now?” Cayden asked, though his tone was more curious than annoyed.
Brandon didn’t stop. He pulled out a thick stack of travel tickets–railway receipts, plane tickets, bus passes, even a few ferry stubs–and laid them gently in front of Iris.
“When my sister was born,” Brandon began, his voice soft but full of emotion, “Dad was just a regular sales rep at a pharma company. Money was really tight back then, so Mom delivered at the county hospital where she worked as a nurse. No one expected… she’d hemorrhage and pass away. And my sister–not even half an hour old–was taken from the maternity ward.”
He gestured to the pile. “These are all the tickets from Dad traveling across the country looking for her, over more than twenty years. Once he could afford it, he drove or flew everywhere he heard a lead. Otherwise, there’d be way more than this.”
Cayden wiped at his eyes, embarrassed. “Why are you telling Iris all this?”
But these weren’t just tickets–they were pieces of a father’s heart, spent mile by mile.
Iris felt a heaviness settle in her chest. For some reason, her eyes grew warm and blurry.

Whether she turned out to be his daughter or not, she was deeply moved.
Brandon set the tickets aside and pulled out a bundle of faded flyers. They were missing- person posters, but the photo showed a grainy still from a hospital security camera—a woman bundled in a coat and scarf, face masked, hurrying out a back exit with a newborn in her arms.
“Security cameras back then were basically useless for details,” Brandon explained quietly. “This was the only image they had of the person who took my sister. Dad printed millions of these flyers. He hired people to post them all over, but he was always afraid they’d miss places. So whenever he had time, he’d fly or drive somewhere new and put them up himself. He got stopped by police more times than I can remember–suspicious behavior, they’d say.”
Cayden’s eyes reddened at the memory. He picked up one of the flyers, his thumb brushing gently over the blurry image of the baby wrapped in blankets.
Iris‘ nose stung. She took a slow breath, pressing her fingers to her cheeks to catch the tears before they fell.
Next, Brandon took out old search banners and a folder of bank transfer records.
“Any tip, no matter how small, Dad followed up. He sent money to scammers, to psychics, to strangers who claimed they’d seen her. The amount he spent… could’ve supported an average family for lifetimes. If he hadn’t built the business up over the years, we would’ve been buried in debt long ago.”
From the bottom of the box, Brandon lifted a framed family photo and handed it to Iris.
She held it carefully. It showed a smiling couple with a young boy–and the woman was visibly pregnant, one hand resting gently on her belly.
Brandon’s gaze was earnest as he watched Iris‘ face. “When I was a junior, I saw you at freshman orientation. You reminded me of my mom–something in your smile, maybe. I kept an eye on you for a while, but then I found out you had parents and a twin brother back home. So I let it go,”
He paused, then slowly took out one last envelope. “And now, all these years later… it looks like we might have another chance.”
Cayden looked nervous. “What do you mean?”
Brandon handed him the document. “It’s a DNA report for Iris and me, Dad. You open it.”
Cayden’s hands shook. He stared at Iris, stunned. “You two did a DNA test?”
Iris nodded quietly.
