Chapter 365 An Awkward Encounter
But Brandon had already vanished from sight and stepped into the room.
There was no time to give him a heads–up.

Iris released a soft sigh. Oh well. Zoe and Harper were still asleep anyway. He would take one look, realize the situation, and probably just back out of the room without making a fuss.
She wasn’t too concerned. She made her way to the dining table, took a seat, and called toward the kitchen, “What are we having for breakfast?”
Just then, the nanny walked out of the kitchen holding Harper’s hand.
When Iris spotted Harper, she was completely bewildered. She turned to look back up at the second–floor landing.
A flicker of panic crossed her face. “Harper, you’re up? Where’s Zoe?”
“Zoe is up too. She’s in the room.”
Iris smiled with a trace of knowing amusement and glanced back toward the second floor.
Brandon pushed the door open and walked inside. The bedding on the large bed was a tangled mess, but Harper was nowhere in sight.
He scanned the room and headed toward the ensuite bathroom.
The door was shut.
Harper was probably in there.
But since when could a three–year–old handle brushing her teeth and washing her face on her
own?
Worried, he turned the knob and stepped inside. “Harper—”
In the next second, his entire body locked up.
His eyes went wide and heated as he stared at the woman standing in the bathroom. More specifically, at a slender, pale back marred by patches of angry red and deep purple bruises. They looked brutal.
When his gaze shifted to the mirror and he connected that beautiful face with the woman he hadn’t been able to get out of his head, he was blindsided. He stood rooted to the spot, as if someone had hit a pause button on him.

Zoe was startled too. She snatched her clothes from the counter to cover her chest. The tube of ointment in her hand slipped and clattered into the sink. She nervously looked up at the reflection.
She saw Brandon standing behind her. Her heart immediately kicked into high gear. She felt a mix of nerves and sheer mortification.
This was the worst!
She wanted the floor to open up and swallow her whole.
He was the one who had helped her with that OBGYN app back the past, which was already humiliating enough. And now this again? She honestly wanted to smack her forehead against the wall. It was beyond embarrassing.
She had stripped down completely to apply the medicine.
She wasn’t sure if he had seen her front via the mirror, but he had definitely gotten an eyeful of her back. And he was still looking. He didn’t even seem to be processing the idea of leaving.
The air grew heavy and tense. Zoe took a deep breath, her face flushing crimson. She squeezed her eyes shut, lowered her head, gritted her teeth, and finally broke the excruciating silence. “Dr. Whitmore, could you please step out?”
Brandon snapped back to reality. His Adam’s apple bobbed. He let out a ragged breath, walked fully into the bathroom, and shut the door behind him.
“How did you get hurt?” Brandon moved to her side, retrieved the medicine tube from the sink, his voice thick with worry and concern. He sounded genuinely unsettled. “Have you been to a hospital?”
“No.” Zoe was terrified her clothes wouldn’t cover enough, so she clutched them tighter against
her chest.
“You can’t reach the injuries on your back. Let me help you apply the ointment.” Brandon’s was warm, his voice gentle.

Zoe wasn’t usually one to overcomplicate things. He had already seen everything, and besides, he was a doctor.
Even if she felt shy, reserved, awkward, or even annoyed.
She physically couldn’t see her back and desperately needed someone to help get the medicine
“Thanks, Dr. Whitmore.” Zoe didn’t dare open her eyes. She kept her head down as she

Brandon let out a soft, warm exhale. His Adam’s apple shifted again. He squeezed some ointment onto his fingertip and gently pressed it against the bruised skin of her back.
Her skin was soft and smooth.
Her back was beautiful, but all he could focus on was the bruises. His eyes filled with sympathy for her pain.
“Who did this to you?” Brandon’s tone was tender, but there was a current of suppressed anger running beneath it.
Zoe felt his fingertip gliding across her back. The cool sensation of the ointment made her entire body tingle. The skin on her back prickled in response.
Her heartbeat accelerated. Her breathing quickened. She was so nervous that her whole body seized up. Her nerves were practically screaming. She could barely manage a coherent answer. “My dad.”
Brandon’s expression grew complicated. He fell suddenly silent.
Zoe pressed her clothes flat against her front, forgetting just how full her chest actually was.
Back in college, her roommates used to tease her relentlessly, saying her chest was too big and she shouldn’t run because she’d lose her balance and tip forward.
