Brandon held the jewelry box tightly, his hand still suspended in the air. A trace of sorrow flickered through his eyes, faint and almost imperceptible. He remained motionless, a heavy weight settling in his chest.
Iris walked ahead but glanced back at her brother. His silhouette looked lonely and dispirited under the dim porch light.
She couldn’t help thinking that Zoe was being pretty harsh.
Then again, Zoe wasn’t wrong–not leading him on was the kinder way to avoid hurting him later.
They stepped through the main entrance into the lobby.
Zoe’s building had an elevator. She eyed the gift in her hands and forced a light smile. “So what’d you get me? It’s pretty big. I’m kinda curious…”
Iris cut in softly, “Zoe… you sure you won’t regret this?”
“Regret what?” Zoe played innocent.
Iris sighed quietly, then said in a serious tone, “To get our dad off his back about settling down, my brother started fake–dating Yvette. You know, just to buy some time.”
Zoe shrugged, as if it didn’t matter. “Why tell me?”
“Both families thought they should spend more time together, so about a month ago, Yvette moved into my brother’s place.” Iris reached for Zoe’s hand, her voice concerned. “I’ve been around her for weeks now. She’s genuinely sweet, thoughtful… a really good person. If you keep shutting my brother out completely, how long do you think a crush can last? If this goes on, he could easily develop real feelings for her.”
Zoe chuckled softly. “Wouldn’t that be a good thing?”
Iris‘ chest tightened. “But you like him, and he likes you. So why-”
“Elevator’s here.” Zoe tugged her inside, pressed the close button, then hit six. As the car ascended, she said calmly, “Liking someone means wanting what’s best for them–a better future, a happier life. It’s not about forcing something painful just to be together. That’s not love. That’s selfish.”
“Zoe, why do you always see things so pessimistically?”
“Because I don’t believe love can bridge a class divide.”

Iris fell silent, another sigh escaping her.

The moon hung bright in the sky, stars scattered thinly around it. A chilly breeze swept through the balcony window, sharp and biting.
Yvette rubbed her arms absently, her gaze fixed on the large wrought–iron gate outside the villa. Without her realizing, a wistful sadness had crept into her eyes.
The housekeeper approached and gently urged, “Ms. Jensen, it’s cold out here. Why don’t you close the window and head to your room?”
Yvette offered a faint smile. “I’m alright. You should get some rest.”
The housekeeper sighed. “You know Mr. Whitmore and Ms. Whitmore went to celebrate Ms. Ellison’s birthday, and still you went through the trouble of making soup for him to have later. He’ll be back late, and all that effort might go to waste again.”
“Please, don’t say that.” Yvette didn’t want her unspoken affection to feel like a burden to
anyone.
If he had some when he returned, she’d be glad.
If not, she wouldn’t complain.
The housekeeper exhaled slowly, murmuring under her breath, “You’re such a lovely young woman, Ms. Jensen. Why can’t the young master see that?”
“You cook, you bake all sorts of desserts, you’re considerate, gentle, kind…” She shook her head fondly. “If my son ever married someone like you, I’d be thanking my lucky stars.”
“I’m really not that special.” Yvette closed the window and drew the curtains. “I’ll head up now. Don’t worry.”
The housekeeper nodded, satisfied.
Just then, steady footsteps sounded from the staircase.
Yvette looked up to see Julian coming down.
“Julian, you’re still up?” she greeted politely.
“Couldn’t sleep. My wife’s out, so I came down to wait for her.” Julian passed by with a nod and made his way toward the front door.

Yvette followed him outside, wrapping her cardigan a little tighter.
Brandon hadn’t left yet. He’d waited downstairs outside Zoe’s apartment building until Iris was done, then drove her home.
The whole ride back, Iris had felt a pang of guilt for her brother. She asked why he’d been so stubborn, waiting out in the cold like that.
Brandon hadn’t answered.
As they pulled up, Brandon was just opening the car door when Julian walked over. He exchanged a few low words with Brandon, then leaned in and scooped Iris out of the passenger
seat.
Ever since she’d twisted her ankle, Julian hadn’t let her walk when he was around.
