The morning was overcast and bleak. A chilly northern wind carried a damp, drizzling rain, leaving the world outside feeling raw and miserably wet.
Brandon’s internal clock never failed him. He woke on time, went through his morning routine, checked the weather forecast, and dressed in warmer layers.
As he stepped out of his bedroom fastening his watch, he expected to find his father already up and having breakfast downstairs.
Making his way to the kitchen, he saw the housekeeper setting out the morning meal. “Is Dad at work already?” he asked, glancing toward the empty dining chair.
“Mr. Whitmore hasn’t come down yet today,” she replied.
A flicker of worry passed through Brandon. He turned quickly and headed to his father’s room.
Pushing the door open, he found Cayden on the floor in his pajamas, unmoving.
“Dad!” Brandon rushed over, dropping to his knees to check for a pulse and breathing. Relief washed over him briefly–his father was alive, his heart still beating.
Scooping Cayden into his arms, Brandon hurried out into the hallway. “Iris! Julian! Something’s wrong with Dad!” he shouted, his voice tense.
To the startled staff hovering nearby, he commanded, “Get the car ready–now!”
Julian and Iris emerged from their room, dressed for work, and rushed down the stairs.
Yvette, drawn by the commotion, appeared in her doorway just as Brandon and Julian were carefully loading Cayden into the back seat of the car.
By the time she threw on proper clothes and ran outside, the vehicle was already pulling away, speeding toward the hospital.
At the hospital, Cayden lay asleep in a quiet room.
Iris sat beside the bed, holding his hand. Her eyes glistened as she studied his face, noticing the years that had slowly settled there. Her father—always so capable, so tirelessly dedicated–was well past retirement age, yet he kept pushing himself for the sake of the company.
“You brought him in just in time,” the doctor was saying to Brandon and Julian in the hallway. “He was showing early signs of a stroke.” He went over the necessary precautions and warning

Not long after, Frederick arrived with his wife and Beatrice, after hearing what had happened.
Beatrice gently comforted Iris, urging her not to worry too much.
Frederick turned to Brandon, his tone earnest. “Your father isn’t as young as he used to be. You can’t expect him to keep carrying the company forever. Isn’t it time you stepped in? You’re his only son. It’s not really fair to leave everything to your sister or brother–in–law–they have their own careers, their own busy lives.”
Brandon gave a slow nod. “You’re right. I’ll think it over.”
Julian rested a hand on Brandon’s shoulder. “If you need any help learning the ropes, just ask. Running Aurelium Group is no small task. Dad’s health… he probably shouldn’t be under that much stress anymore.”
Around noon, Cayden finally stirred awake.
He looked around the hospital room, taking in the anxious faces surrounding him.
Iris explained what the doctor had said.
Sitting up, he moved his arms and legs experimentally, then brushed it off with typical stubbornness. “I’m perfectly fine. You’re all overreacting.”
Brandon could only sigh.
Cayden glanced at his phone. “Noon already? I missed breakfast–I’m starving. Is there anything to eat?”
In their concern, no one had thought about food. They exchanged looks, realizing they’d all been too worried to step out.
“What do you feel like? I’ll go pick something up,” Brandon offered.
Cayden let out an exaggerated groan. “By the time you get back, I’ll have wasted
away…”
Just then, a light knock sounded at the door.
All eyes turned as Yvette stepped inside, carrying an insulated food container. “Cayden… how are you feeling?”
Before she could finish, Cayden pushed back the covers and swung his legs over the side of the bed, his face brightening. “Yvette–always the thoughtful one. What did you bring for me?”
“Dad, take it easy,” Iris said, hurrying to his side. Julian and Brandon tensed, ready to catch him

“Sweetheart, I’m okay,” Cayden chuckled, taking the container from Yvette. “See? Yvette remembers I have low blood sugar. Knew I’d be starving by now.”
Yvette felt everyone’s eyes on her and offered a small, slightly nervous smile.
