Daniel spoke in a calm, flat tone. “The people in my family–those who deserved to live are gone. The ones who didn’t are still breathing. I have no desire to see any of them.”
His words stabbed Zoe straight in the heart, leaving a dull ache in her chest.
In that moment, she finally understood him. His wild edge, his blurred moral boundaries—life had broken him this way. He was not born like this.
Daniel noticed her gloomy expression. He knew she felt his pain and pitied him.
He hated the thought of her feeling sorry for him.
He brushed a finger gently across her soft cheek and whispered, “Are you hungry? I can cook you something.”
“I just had dinner. I’m not hungry.”
“Wanna go watch a movie? There are new Christmas movies out.”
Zoe shook her head.
She didn’t want to waste his money.
“Just stay and talk with me?”
“Okay.”
Daniel tangled his long fingers in her hair, twirling a strand slowly. “Are you heading home tonight?”
Zoe’s heart raced. She let out a long breath. “I’m staying.”
A playful smirk tugged at his lips. “That eager?”
Zoe squeezed her dress tightly, her body tensed up. “You can’t keep dragging this out. I’ve owed you once for so long. Not knowing when you’ll ask for it keeps me restless and uneasy.”
Daniel leaned close to her ear and murmured in a low, teasing voice, “Do you think about me often?”
He hit the nail right on the head. She saw through his little tricks, realizing how calculating he could be.

His eyes burned with raw desire. He swallowed hard but held himself back. “I can’t do it tonight.”
“Can’t?” Zoe let out a dry, annoyed huff. “Don’t tell me you’ve got the male mood swings.”
Daniel burst out laughing. He pressed a hand to his forehead, chuckling quietly to himself.
“Fine. I’m leaving.” Zoe stood up.
Daniel grabbed her wrist in an instant and pulled her back down onto the couch.
“I have plenty of spare rooms. Stay here for the night.”
Zoe looked helpless, staring at him. “Mr. Cross, I don’t wanna keep owing you anything. The weight is crushing me. Pick one–either take the money, or take me.”
His voice dropped to a deep, husky murmur. “I choose you.”
“Let’s do it now.” Without hesitation, Zoe climbed onto him. She pressed his shoulders down and pinned him flat against the couch.
Daniel swallowed, his lips dry. He stared up at her with smoldering eyes, his breathing heavy and uneven. His chest rose and fell.
Zoe straddled his waist and pulled off her jacket.
Her cheeks flushed bright red, yet her movements were quick and decisive.
The second she leaned down, Daniel planted both hands firmly on her shoulders.
His voice sounded rough and gritty. “Are you in such a rush to have me… or to get rid of me?”
“Does it matter?” Deep down, she knew the answer was the latter.
She never wanted to get tangled up with any man ever again. Breaking free was the only thing she craved.
“It matters a lot.”
“The first one.” Zoe lied without a single tremor.
Daniel smiled faintly. He cupped the back of her head and kissed her.

After a long while, Daniel pulled away. He panted softly, gazing down at her blushing face.
“Get some rest. I’m taking you out tomorrow morning.” His voice was deep and magnetic above her head.
Zoe closed her eyes and nodded.
“Good night.” His tone was gentle, laced with quiet affection.
He kissed her forehead before slowly pulling himself away from her.
She didn’t open her eyes until she heard his footsteps leave.
She glanced toward the door as he stepped out and closed it softly.
Zoe breathed heavily, her heart still pounding wildly.
Her chest felt tighter than ever because of him.
He had chased her for two years. He clearly wanted her badly, yet he held back at the last
second.
Was he impotent?
But she had felt how hard he was when she straddled his waist.
He was more than capable.
