Every pair of eyes in the room locked on her.
Yvette had never imagined such a life–altering decision would land solely on her.

She’d grown up with wealth and privilege, but for people born into families like hers, marriage was rarely a choice.
Marrying the man she loved was something she’d longed for endlessly.
She didn’t dare put it off–too many things could go wrong at the last minute.
The sooner, the better.
“Would the start of next month work for you?” Yvette asked Brandon, unsure of herself.
Brandon visibly froze at her question.
Bertha sounded plainly displeased. “That’s less than two weeks away. Why are you in such a hurry to get married? Brandon needs time to plan everything. He’s got a million things to sort out.”
“A simple wedding is fine with me.” Yvette kept her eyes lowered, unable to meet Brandon’s
gaze.
She knew she was pushing him unreasonably.
Pulling off a wedding in half a month was undeniably stressful for him.
But she could not stand living under the same roof as Judith any longer.
Now that Brandon had formally proposed to her, Judith undoubtedly harbored deep resentment. She would only grow more vengeful.
“Yvette, next month is way too rushed,” Madeline chimed in. “What about the end of the year?”
Everyone tried to persuade her, and she knew she ought to consider Brandon’s feelings.
She was about to speak when Brandon cut her off.
“It’s alright. We’ll get married next month. I’ll handle every detail of the wedding. None of you need to worry about a thing.”

Brandon had always held an impeccable reputation; everyone spoke highly of him. Ralph also knew Cayden well, and he could not have been more satisfied with this union.
The wedding date was officially set right then.
After dinner, Yvette walked Brandon out personally.
Once they reached his car, Brandon turned to her. “Don’t walk me out. Go back inside.”
Yvette nodded again. “Thank you, Brandon.”
A soft smile tugged at Brandon’s lips. “Save the thanks. This is nothing more than a business marriage. We’re simply helping each other out.”
His constant emphasis on their transactional marriage left a sharp, bitter ache in Yvette’s chest.
She knew she had to keep her distance after marriage and never become a burden to him.
“I understand, Brandon.”
Brandon stared at her dejected face for a beat. He had nothing else to say, so he climbed into his car.
The car window rolled down slowly. He glanced over at her with a gentle smile.
Yvette forced a smile and waved. “Drive carefully.”
Brandon nodded, waved back, and pulled away.
Yvette stood motionless in the garden, watching his car fade into the distance.
Moments later, a cold voice sounded behind her.
“You’re cunning, Yvette. What did you say to make Brandon change his mind?”
A cold chill shot down Yvette’s spine.
She spun around in alarm.
The streetlamp cast a harsh glow across Judith’s icy face. Her eyes were vicious and unhinged, sending cold shivers through Yvette.
“I don’t have that kind of power over him. You overestimate me.”

With that, Yvette tried to walk past her.
Judith gritted her teeth and snatched her arm in a tight grip.
Her hold was brutal, leaving a sharp stinging pain on Yvette’s skin.
Is she going to bully me again?
Panicked, Yvette shouted toward the empty space behind Judith, “Dad!”
Judith flinched and instantly let go.
Seizing the opening, Yvette darted straight back into the house.
Judith whipped around, only to find nobody else in the garden.
She stamped her foot in rage, glaring daggers at Yvette’s retreating figure.
“You’ve gotten smarter, Yvette. Don’t think you can outplay me.”
Her
gaze turned darker, filled with malice.

Over the next two weeks, Yvette turned down the majority of her work to focus on designing her wedding dress.
Brandon took full charge of every wedding arrangement.
Due to the tight timeline, they didn’t even have time to take wedding photos.
