He was punctual to a fault, not just with her, but with everyone. He would never simply disappear without a word. Even if he’d been in an accident, he would have crawled here if he had to.
As the sky grew darker, the snow began to accumulate, turning Evadne’s dark hair a silvery white. She stood alone at the foot of the vast mountain, looking small, fragile, and utterly desolate.
“Ms. Ashbourne, the weather report says we’re in for a blizzard tonight,” Captain Sean said, walking over to her. He saw the raw pain in her dull eyes and the redness of her frozen cheeks, and his heart ached for her. “It’s getting late. I think… maybe he’s not coming.”
“But why wouldn’t he let me know…” Evadne whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind, thick with a choked-back sob.
Captain Sean slapped his forehead. “Oh! Maybe he tried to contact you, but you didn’t get the message! The signal is so spotty out here. Why don’t you come to my office? You’ll have a signal there.”
“But… how could he not come?” Evadne’s eyes were red, her breath coming out in white puffs that blurred her vision. “He promised…”
“It’s just hiking. You can always reschedule,” Captain Sean said, trying to comfort her. “Besides, the weather’s terrible. It’s not safe to be on the mountain. You two can come back on a nicer day. It’s getting cold. You should go home.”
But in the next moment, Evadne took a deep, resolute breath and began walking toward the trailhead.
“Ms. Ashbourne, if you’re really going up, I’m coming with you!” Captain Sean shouted after her, his voice filled with alarm.
“No need!” Evadne called back, her eyes shining like stars in the winter night. “You forget, they call me the ‘Mountain Goddess’!”
But this time, there was no ‘Mountain God’ to shield her with his strong, steady presence.
Thaddeus had broken his promise, but she would not. She would fulfill their pact, even if she had to do it alone.
“She went back to Elmsworth,” she said nonchalantly. “About an hour ago.”
Gordon’s face turned red with rage. “Back to Elmsworth?! I thought you said she was from Marlowe City!”
“I never said that. I said she was *in* Marlowe City. She’s from Elmsworth. It was just a coincidence that she was here.”
Gordon gritted his teeth. “You…”
Thaddeus strode across the room, his powerful frame cutting through the dim light. He stopped in front of her, his eyes blazing with a molten fury that could incinerate anything in its path. He grabbed the front of her shirt, his grip so tight he nearly lifted her off the floor.
“Are you,” he snarled, “playing games with me?!”
