“Whatever do you mean, Mr. Abernathy?” Alexia said, looking up at his furious, bloodshot eyes with a faint, mocking smile. “I had no idea she was from Elmsworth. If I had known, I wouldn’t have let you come all this way for nothing.” She was no longer the timid, manipulative girl she once was. With a powerful backer, she was not intimidated by his rage.
“Then why the hell didn’t you say so sooner?!” Gordon shouted, stepping forward. “Do you have any idea how important today was for Mr. Abernathy and Ms. Ashbourne?! He came all this way for your stupid lead! And now you tell us she’s back in Elmsworth?! What kind of sick game are you playing? Did you do this on purpose to ruin their date?!”
“Ms. Ashbourne?” Alexia’s eyes flashed with cold fire. The name was like nails on a chalkboard to her. “I thought they broke up. Isn’t it a bit inappropriate to still be calling her that? Besides, how was I supposed to know they had plans? And even if they did, surely finding his savior is more important to Mr. Abernathy.”
And the facts proved her right. ‘Paloma’ was a hundred times more important to him than Evadne was. The thought of that bitch who had nearly gotten her killed, standing alone in the bitter cold, heartbroken and abandoned, sent a thrill of pure, ecstatic joy through her veins.
Thaddeus’s face was a dark mask of fury, his eyes sharp and menacing. His emotions may have been blunted, but his capacity for rage was fully intact.
“Ah!” Alexia cried out as he shoved her backward onto the sofa. Her neck slammed against the wooden frame, and she winced in pain.
“Ms. Alexia, you’d better pray my savior is really in Elmsworth,” Thaddeus growled before turning and storming out of the room.
Alexia rubbed her bruised neck, her eyes following him with a venomous glare. *Useless rage,* she thought. *Vent all you want. I completed my mission.* Besides, what right did he have to be angry? He was the one who had abandoned Evadne, the one who had broken his promise.
Thaddeus’s strides grew longer, faster, until he was practically running. Despite the freezing temperature, he was drenched in sweat. He had just reached his car when his phone rang. He fumbled for it, his heart pounding with a strange sense of dread.
“Something came up. I texted her beforehand. She should have seen it,” Thaddeus said, not making excuses, just stating the facts. “It’s my fault. I’ll make it up to her when I get back.”
“Make it up to her… Thaddeus, do you hear yourself?!” Jason’s voice was raw with fury. “When you divorced her, you got into a car crash and still dragged yourself to the courthouse with a concussion! You’ve always put her first! The Abernathy Group could have gone bankrupt, the world could have ended, and you wouldn’t have left her side! What is she to you now? An inconvenience? Something you can just cast aside like trash?! Just because you don’t love her anymore, you think you can treat her like this?!”
Thaddeus’s lips trembled. He struggled to breathe, a phantom hand tightening around his throat.
“Where is she? I’ll go to her.”
