“I can’t reach her!” Jason’s usually calm, steady voice was choked with panic. “There’s a blizzard tonight, and you know how stubborn she is! She must have gone up the mountain by herself! I’m on my way to Pine Grove Park now!”
A roaring filled Thaddeus’s ears, and a wave of excruciating pain crashed over him, making him shudder.
“Thaddeus, you goddamn bastard! If anything happens to her, you will regret it for the rest of your life!”
…
That night, the temperature plummeted to twenty degrees below zero. The blizzard raged through the forest, the wind whipping at Evadne’s face like a razor. The skeletal trees swayed violently, and the howling wind created an eerie, mournful symphony that only deepened her despair.
She pushed onward, her legs numb, a single, desperate mantra echoing in her mind.
“I hate you, Thaddeus… I hate you…”
Tears froze on her lashes. She had planned this day so carefully, hoping to rekindle the fire between them, to remind him of the life-and-death moments they had shared, the bond they had forged in the face of disaster.
Now, it was all for nothing. There would be no more chances.
“Wake up, Evadne,” she sobbed, her words swallowed by the storm. “He doesn’t want you anymore… you’re not important to him…”
…
The moment his private jet touched down, Thaddeus jumped into a sports car and sped toward Pine Grove Park. The roads were treacherous, the visibility near zero, but he pushed the car to its limits, his only thought to get to Evadne.
Just a few miles from the park, a black sports car materialized out of the swirling snow, pulling up alongside him. A primal sense of danger shot through him. He glanced over and saw a face that was both handsome and chillingly ruthless.
It was Hans.
Thaddeus’s jaw tightened. The next moment, Hans raised a hand, a gun held firmly in his grip, the dark muzzle pointed directly at Thaddeus’s head.
