Due to a tight schedule, Debby had to fly back to Helgen the very next day to accompany her husband, the President, who managed state affairs around the clock.
Late that night, Evadne and Thaddeus went with them to the hospital to visit Suri.
Evadne knocked softly on the ward door.
The door soon opened, revealing Hans's gaunt, exhausted face. His cheeks were hollowed out, and he had lost a shocking amount of weight.
"Hans, how are you holding up?" Evadne asked, her heart aching at the sight of him.
"I'm fine."
Hans's long eyelashes trembled, casting dark shadows beneath his eyes. "How is Dad?"
"He's doing well, don't worry."
Evadne forced down her own sorrow, giving him a bright smile. "Hans, Debby and Darcy are here. They wanted to see you."
"Debby..." Hans murmured softly, his eyes flashing with emotion.
Evadne let out a tearful chuckle. "I call her my older sister, but you have to call her your younger sister, Hans."
Hans walked out of the room with heavy, sluggish steps. When he saw Debby standing there, tears streaming down her face as she called out to him, his defenses crumbled.
Without realizing it, tears cascaded down his own face like rain.
"Hans..."
Debby threw her arms open and hugged his rigid frame tightly. Her tears soaked through his shirt, the warmth seeping directly into his shattered heart. "I missed you so much... welcome home..."
"Welcome home, Hans. We've all been waiting for you." Darcy's eyes were also brimming with tears. The dignified President of a nation was completely unable to control his emotions in that moment.
"Thank you for remembering me," Hans rasped, squeezing his eyes shut to stop the tears from falling.
Watching the reunion, Evadne couldn't hold back her own tears. She naturally turned and buried her face in Thaddeus's chest, instinctively using his tie to wipe her eyes.
Thaddeus stood perfectly still, looking down at the woman treating him like a giant tissue. Far from being annoyed, he found himself entirely captivated by how freely she relied on him.
His breathing grew heavy. He slowly raised his large hand, gently cupping the back of her head and pulling her closer into his embrace.
Evadne's cheeks instantly flushed scarlet. Her eyelashes fluttered before her slender arms wrapped tightly around his firm waist. She tucked her delicate frame completely into his oversized suit coat, holding him in complete silence.
He was slowly finding the rhythm they used to share.
He was slowly piecing together every memory of her.
Even if love truly could fade away...
Nothing could stop them from falling in love all over again.
"That necklace... Mother always wore it."
Their brother had finally, completely, come home.
...
Three days later.
Frederic Abernathy returned from his overseas recuperation. The very first thing he did was convene an emergency board meeting. As the active Chairman of the Abernathy group, he needed to firmly re-establish his grip on all ongoing projects and future directions.
The board members took their seats. Frederic cleared his throat, but before he could utter a single word, the doors to the conference room were abruptly pushed open.
Under the confused gazes of the executives, Dennis rushed in. Suppressing his sheer panic, he hurried to Frederic's side and whispered frantically in his ear.
Frederic's face drained of color.
Sitting to his left, Chad's brow furrowed coldly.
Even though he couldn't hear what Dennis was saying, a heavy sense of dread washed over him. Something catastrophic was happening.
Sure enough, a second later, the sound of chaotic footsteps echoed from the hallway, followed by the frantic shouting of security guards.
"You can't go in there! The board is in the middle of a meeting!"
"Fine, we don't have to go in. But tell your CEO, Mr. Chad, to come out and come with us immediately."
