That evening, Evadne and Thaddeus returned to Silverlake Harbor. Cassius, Arnold and his wife, Bennett, and the matriarchs of the family were already waiting for them.
"Cassius! Arnold! Gia! Aviana!"
The moment Evadne stepped through the door, the exhaustion of her busy day melted away. She threw herself into Cassius's arms, nuzzling against his chest like an affectionate, spoiled kitten.
"Oh, my! Look at this grown woman, still acting like a clingy little girl!" Aviana teased with a warm laugh.
"It's fine. I love it when she acts like this with me."
Cassius looked down, a warm smile crinkling the corners of his eyes as his large hand gently stroked the back of his sister's head. "Evadne can always rely on me. She can make endless demands, throw tantrums, and be as spoiled as she wants. In my eyes, she'll never grow up."
He meant every word of it.
In the entire Ashbourne family, Cassius was the only one who spoiled her with such boundless, reckless indulgence.
Oh, wait. There was one other.
The former Thaddeus Abernathy.
The word "former" felt like a dull, jagged knife.
Everyone in the room had witnessed the earth-shattering way Thaddeus used to love Evadne. Being reminded of it now only brought a wave of suffocating despair and cruelty.
But their optimism was growing. The fact that Thaddeus was willing to accompany her to a family dinner meant their relationship had taken a massive leap forward.
So what if he had forgotten her completely? Evadne was stunning, brilliant, and captivating. Any man would fall in love with her over and over again for the rest of his life.
Besides, Thaddeus hadn't truly forgotten her. He was just sick.
Once he was cured, everything would go back to normal.
Thaddeus watched the siblings' joyful exchange, his finely sculpted lips curving up uncontrollably. The icy stoicism of his strikingly handsome face began to thaw.
"You should probably be a bit more proper from now on," he murmured.
Evadne sniffled softly, blinking away the faint glisten of tears in her eyes as she gave a slight pout. "Cassius isn't single anymore. He has Chasel now. If I keep clinging to him, what if Chasel gets jealous?"
Nydia blushed, her cheeks turning a deep pink. "He treats me so wonderfully. Whenever he's home, he does all the childcare and never lets me lift a finger. He was supposed to help with dinner tonight, but I was so bored just sitting around. I had to beg him for ages before he finally let me into the kitchen."
Jason looked like he was about to cry from relief as he pulled his wife into a tight embrace. "Thank you for clearing my name, honey!"
He couldn't resist planting a huge kiss on her cheek before leaning in to whisper against her ear, his voice meant only for her.
"I'm going to thoroughly satisfy you tonight."
"What...?" Nydia's face flushed hotter, wanting to cry for an entirely different reason.
Tomorrow morning, her back was going to ache so badly she wouldn't even be able to hold the baby.
The dining table was loaded with exquisite food and wine. The family gathered around in high spirits.
A few moments later, Emeric Ashbourne was wheeled into the room by Mr. Dylan, accompanied by the two matriarchs.
Seeing her father so drastically thinner than before his illness—a man who had once radiated such fierce, commanding energy—caused a lump to form in Evadne's throat as tears instantly welled in her eyes.
