Her heart ached terribly for him.
Sensing the profound sadness radiating from the woman beside him, Thaddeus's chest tightened. Instinctively, he reached out to grab her hand.
Suddenly, his vision went completely black. A violent, piercing agony erupted in his brain, rapidly shooting through his suddenly paralyzed limbs!
Taking advantage of the family's focus on Chairman Emeric, Thaddeus stumbled backward, turned, and slipped out of the dining room unnoticed.
Cold sweat broke out across his forehead. He leaned heavily against the wall of the dimly lit hallway, gasping desperately for air.
With trembling hands, he fished the pill bottle from his pocket. Just as he tried to tip the medicine into his palm, his hands violently spasmed, scattering the blue pills across the floor.
"Damn it...!"
His eyes bloodshot, Thaddeus tried to crouch down to retrieve them, but the overwhelming vertigo and blinding pain stripped him of all control over his body.
"Thaddeus, are you okay?!"
Cassius and Chasel rushed down the hallway just in time, grabbing him by either arm to keep him upright.
Chasel quickly scooped up the bottle and a few intact pills from the floor, immediately pressing them past Thaddeus's lips. His eyes were wide with panic.
"Thaddeus, relax! Deep breaths!"
Thaddeus squeezed his eyes shut and complied. He clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned entirely white, using the stinging sensation to anchor himself to reality.
After what felt like an eternity, the agony began to recede.
He slumped against the wall, his head tipped back. His strikingly handsome face was deathly pale and slick with sweat.
"It looks like the attacks are still frequent, and just as agonizing," Cassius murmured, a sharp pang of sympathy squeezing his chest as he watched the younger man suffer.
"Let's get you upstairs to rest," Chasel said, his voice laced with anxiety.
"No... I took the medicine. I'll be fine in a minute."
Thaddeus let out a heavy, ragged exhale and slowly shook his head. "Tonight is a rare, happy occasion for your family. Evadne is so happy... If she notices I'm gone, she'll instantly know something is wrong.
"I don't want her... worrying about me."
Cassius and Chasel exchanged a heavy look and sighed.
Who dared to say Thaddeus no longer loved Evadne?
Could he truly bring himself to walk away?
But looking at the pathetic state he was in now...
Just then, Thaddeus's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and stared at the screen.
It was Aaron.
"Aaron's been MIA for days, hasn't even shown up to the family dinner. If he's calling now, something major just went down. Answer it," Cassius urged.
Thaddeus immediately accepted the call and put it on speaker. "Aaron, I'm at your family's estate. Cassius and Chasel are right next to me. If you don't mind them hearing, speak freely."
"Thaddeus, something massive just dropped."
Aaron's voice was grim. "It's horrific news, but considering the timing, it might actually work in our favor."
Usually the most composed of the brothers, Cassius lost his patience. "Spit it out, Aaron. Stop stalling."
"Three hours ago, we got a call. A body was discovered on Blackwood Mountain, just on the outskirts of the city."
Aaron's tone was icy and low. "We fast-tracked the DNA. It's a match. The victim is Chad's personal doctor, Alexia."
