"Who?!"
The three men stared at the phone in identical, stunned disbelief.
A second later, the pieces started clicking together in Thaddeus's mind.
He realized he hadn't seen Alexia in quite some time. The woman had practically been Chad's shadow, yet since Chad's arrest, she hadn't surfaced once.
He had assumed she was off running some illicit errand for her boss. He never imagined she'd turn up dead!
"My God... That woman was an absolute nightmare, but... dead? Just like that?" Chasel felt a chill run down his spine.
Cassius wrapped a protective arm around Chasel, his large hand gently rubbing the goosebumps on his partner's arm. "Aaron, do the medical examiners have a cause of death yet? How did she die?"
"The autopsy is still underway, so we don't have the full report yet," Aaron replied. "But when we found her... she was decapitated."
"Holy shit..." Chasel pressed closer into Cassius's chest.
"The head is missing because the killer wanted to stall the identification process," Thaddeus said, a predatory glint flashing in his somber eyes. "But whoever butchered her forgot one crucial detail. Alexia was previously arrested. Her DNA is permanently logged in the police database. They could have hacked her to pieces, and we still would have identified her effortlessly."
Cassius scoffed. "So it was a completely pointless effort."
"What was a pointless effort?"
Evadne suddenly strolled around the corner, her hands casually clasped behind her back. Her eyes curved into bright crescents, looking as clever as ever. "What are you three whispering about out here? Am I not allowed in the boy's club?"
Cassius and Chasel both leaned in. "What do you mean?"
Evadne narrowed her eyes. "Since Hans returned, Alexia was the only competent lackey Chad had left. He's been buried in legal trouble. Why would his most loyal, useful subordinate—who had been with him since Country M—suddenly vanish right when he needed her most? She disappeared, and Chad didn't even bat an eye. He never asked about her. Doesn't that strike you as completely unnatural?"
Aaron's voice came through the speaker, low and grave. "Evadne, are you saying Chad is the one who murdered her?"
Evadne gave a slow nod. "His total lack of reaction is the biggest red flag."
"But..." Chasel frowned. "He has no one left to do his dirty work. Why would he kill her?"
"Because Chad is a complete and utter psycho. A lunatic."
