Chad's pupils dilated sharply.
His heart gave a violent, uncontrollable jolt, followed by a suffocating tightness in his chest, as if thorny vines were crushing his organs. Breathing suddenly became a chore.
The lawyer was furious, completely in the dark. "Who the hell is Acacia Stirling? Who is that? What does she have to do with Mr. Abernathy?"
"It doesn't matter if you know her," Aaron said, his tone aggressive and driving straight to the point. "As long as Mr. Abernathy does, that's enough. I'm sure you're well aware that Alexia is actually Acacia Stirling, aren't you?"
Chad paused for a few seconds before slipping his calm, unbothered mask back on. He met Aaron's gaze with a faint smile.
"What are you trying to say?"
"Alexia was your assistant and personal physician. From Country M to Crescentville, the two of you were inseparable. Yet she suddenly disappears, and you don't seem worried at all, Mr. Chad."
Chad crossed his long legs, his posture completely relaxed. "She asked for an extended leave of absence. She said she wanted to travel and clear her head, so I agreed. She was just my assistant, not my lover. She has the freedom to go wherever she pleases. I didn't need to be tied to her twenty-four seven."
Aaron couldn't help but clap his hands. "Bravo. That's a great excuse."
A sinister gleam flickered in Chad's eyes.
Just then, another officer stepped forward and placed an evidence bag on the table right in front of him.
"The medical examiner recovered this sapphire cufflink from the victim's stomach. It bears the eagle crest of the Abernathy family."
Chad's spine instantly stiffened. His dark pupils shrank to sharp pinpoints, locking onto the sapphire cufflink that belonged to him.
His mind raced, hot and chaotic like a boiling cauldron. In a flash, his memories dragged him back to the night he had choked the life out of Alexia with his own hands.
He had thought Holden cleaned it up perfectly, leaving no trace behind.
