Leroy was bursting with indignation, but the sheer weight of Clive's authority choked the sobs right out of him. He clamped his mouth shut, though his glare toward Whitley only grew more venomous.
The equestrian club's emergency medics arrived swiftly, applying basic first aid until the wail of sirens signaled the ambulance's arrival.
Clive and Yelena were carefully helped into the back of the rig.
Lying on the stretcher, Yelena cast a weak glance at Whitley. Her tone held a subtle, unmistakable undercurrent of ownership and victimhood. "Whitley, I'm not in any condition right now... Could you please look after Leroy for us?"
With one casual sentence, she positioned herself as the undisputed lady of the house. She was the one carrying the Sherwood heir, the true partner, while Whitley was relegated to the role of a temporary babysitter.
Clive finally bestowed a fleeting glance upon Whitley. His tone was cold and absolute. "Take care of him."
Before Whitley could even part her lips to decline, the ambulance doors slammed shut, and the vehicle sped off into the distance.
From start to finish, they hadn't asked if she was willing. They hadn't even checked if she was in shock.
Around them, the club staff murmured in hushed, dramatic tones.
"God, that was terrifying. That poor woman is pregnant, no wonder Mr. Sherwood was so frantic."
"He's bleeding half to death, and he only had eyes for her. That's real love right there."
Whitley stood completely expressionless, not uttering a single word.
Leroy, still radiating resentment, glared at her. "It's all your fault! If it weren't for you, Yelena wouldn't have fallen, and Clive wouldn't be hurt! Nightfire was perfectly fine when we came here a few days ago!"
"Yelena has a baby in her tummy! If anything happens to that baby, I will never forgive you!"
Tessa immediately stepped in front of Whitley, her little face flushed with anger. She glared right back at Leroy. "You don't get to talk to Whitley like that! That was scary for everyone, and she could have been hurt too! That woman pulled the reins too hard, why are you blaming someone else?!"
Stunned by Tessa's fierce retort, Leroy stamped his foot, unable to find a comeback.
Cole's shocked, gossip-hungry stare had lingered on Whitley like a physical prick, but she brushed it off.
Tessa gently tugged at Whitley's fingers, her lips pressed into a tight line, clearly unsure of what to say.
Whitley knelt down to eye level. Her voice was serene but impossibly clear.
"Tessa, remember this. From now on, we are never interacting with the Sherwoods again."
Tessa nodded emphatically. Leaning forward, she wrapped her small arms tightly around Whitley's neck, burying her face in her shoulder. "I will always stand by your side. Nobody is allowed to bully you," she whispered fiercely.
It was such a tiny embrace, yet it offered an anchor of warmth.
Whitley gently patted the girl's back, a heavy ache blooming in her chest.
After a quiet moment, Tessa pulled back slightly, her eyes rimmed red. "Whitley... he was bleeding a lot... is he going to be okay?"
