His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 166

Tessa stared up at her, her little face flushed, her eyes incredibly wide and vulnerable.

Whitley gently pulled the child into her arms, her voice soft but unyielding.

"We shouldn't force ourselves to chase warmth that was never meant for us."

"The people and the things that break our hearts... we just have to slowly let them go."

She had seen through Clive a long time ago, but Tessa still harbored an innocent hope.

She couldn't just rip the idealized image of him out of the child's heart overnight. All she could do was stand by her, buffering the blows as much as possible.

After all, Clive used to be decent to Tessa. The sudden, glacial shift was too much for a child to process.

Early the next morning.

After dropping Tessa off at school, Whitley headed straight to the lab to check on the clinical trials.

The project was in its most critical testing phase, and she needed to oversee every single variable.

Meanwhile, in the VIP hospital suite.

Yelena had ordered a lavish breakfast bright and early. Sitting faithfully by Clive's bedside, she stared at the thick layers of bandages across his chest and arm, still visibly shaken.

"Seeing you hurt like this... it breaks my heart every single time."

"You only panic because you care. As long as he knows you're safe, he doesn't care about the pain."

Xander Sherwood's drawl drifted in from the doorway. Having heard about the disaster at the track, he had shown up first thing in the morning, carrying an insulated thermos.

"Brought you some chicken soup. Time to heal up."

Yelena greeted him with a warm smile. "Thank you for the trouble."

She turned, unscrewing the lid of the thermos, and spoke softly to Clive. "It's hard for you to use your hand. Let me feed you."
