"Enough," Bonnie cut in sharply. "Leroy is perfectly well-looked-after at the Manor. Why don't you head back and make sure the kitchen prepares a proper healing soup for Clive?"
Vivienne was still anxiously fretting over her youngest son anyway. Dismissed by the matriarch, she rattled off a few more instructions and hurried out.
The room fell quiet, leaving only the grandmother and grandson.
Bonnie sat down in the armchair by the bed, her gaze piercing and heavy. "Let's hear it. What exactly happened out there? I was told Yelena was also in the arena."
"She was," Clive replied, not bothering to deny it.
Bonnie let out a deep, weary sigh. "I know the two of you have history. But you've been entirely too close lately. The rumors flying around the social circles are completely out of hand. Do you have absolutely zero regard for your reputation?"
"Have you even considered how Whitley must feel?"
When he remained silent, Bonnie pressed on. "Yelena is fine, but the two of you aren't just 'casual friends.' You need to draw a line and maintain your distance."
Clive listened passively, his eyes tracking the fluctuating data on his tablet. He said nothing.
Bonnie's temper flared. "I'm speaking to you. Are you listening?"
Clive slowly lifted his gaze, his tone entirely unaffected. "Whitley doesn't care about any of that. She and Yelena get along perfectly fine."
Bonnie's face darkened.
Over the years, Whitley had never once complained or cried to her about her grievances. But silence didn't mean it didn't hurt.
"Just because she doesn't voice it doesn't mean it doesn't tear her apart."
Clive set the tablet down, a hint of dismissal in his voice. "She's an adult. If she has a problem, she's more than capable of speaking up. You don't need to play her champion at every turn."
"I'm trying to ensure my granddaughter-in-law doesn't suffer in this marriage."
A faint, almost cynical smirk touched Clive's lips. "You coddle her and let her do whatever she pleases. Exactly how is she suffering?"
"If she doesn't want to watch Leroy, she just sends him back. She dictates everything that happens in her personal life. Where exactly is the hardship?"
