Rosario POV
“Teag! What is taking you so long!?” I called out. “Goddess, you always take forever in the bathroom!”
When my sister opened the door, she looked pale. I immediately became concerned. I grabbed her hands, and they were clammy.
“I don’t think I can do this, Rosie. I really don’t.”
“It’s our eighteenth birthday, Teag. It’s another birthday. We don’t even have to worry about shifting. We have been shifting since the day we were born. It’s time to find our mates, though!” I said excitedly.
“What if we don’t find our mates, though?” she asked nervously.
I sighed. “Teag, I really hope that you find your mate and he can help you find your confidence. You have always been the shy one, between the two of us.”
“I don’t know how you have such confidence, Rosie.”
“Because I’m the oldest and I lead the charge in all things. Just like Mom and Dad,” I said in my signature cool, calm, and collected voice.
A knock sounds at the door. “Come in!” I called out.
Mom walks in, and behind her is our youngest sister, Shada. Mom looks at both of us and smiles.
“You both look beautiful. I can’t believe my daughters are all grown up,” she said, getting teary-eyed. “Your father is outside waiting to escort you both into the dining hall. Alphas from a bunch of different packs are here tonight. Some even brought their heirs,” Mom winked.
Teag started shaking. “I don’t think I can do this, Mom. Let Rosie go. I can stay up here,” she said, sitting down on the bed and wrapping her arms around herself.
Mom sat beside her. “Teag, do you know when I met your father, I was terrified?”
All three of us looked at Mom. She’s never mentioned this before. Why are we only hearing about this now?
“Really?” I asked.
“Yes. Your father was, and still is, the most gorgeous man I've ever met. I didn’t even feel the mate bond because Nyx was suppressed. I couldn’t believe a man like him could be my mate. At first, I didn’t even believe it. I was so damaged, and my own father put me down in front of him. I still remember that night like it was yesterday,” Mom said with a wistful smile, but she continued. “Anyway, your father didn’t have to do anything, except love me. That’s the power of the mate bond, Teag. His love is what helped me become the woman I am today. He didn’t change anything about me. He only loved me. That is what made me open up and want to become better. I had to take that first step, though. That’s the step you are taking today.”
I absorbed all of Mom’s words. Love isn’t supposed to force change. It’s supposed to encourage growth because we want it. Teag mulled over Mom’s words, and after a while, she took a deep breath and steadied her breathing.
