“I’ll sleep in the guest room,” Conrad said, knowing Annika wouldn't speak to him again. “Call me if you need anything. Get some rest.”
With that, he grabbed a change of clothes and left for the other guest room. Things were too tense for them to share a room. He figured Annika needed to cool off, and he was willing to give her the space to think.
After Conrad left, Annika sat alone on the bed for what felt like hours, numb, until a kick from the baby inside her brought her back to reality. She finally lay down, a cold tear tracing a path from the corner of her eye as she drifted off to sleep.
Strangely, after Conrad and Annika's explosive fight, Serena’s side of the house fell quiet, the lights in her luxurious wing extinguishing one by one.
——
The next morning, Annika was woken by a commotion downstairs. She got ready and walked out of her room, pointedly glancing at the closed door of the guest room opposite hers.
As she reached the bottom of the stairs, Lana rushed out of the kitchen. “Annika, Serena is gone!”
Annika’s expression remained flat, but she let out a cold, silent laugh. She sat at the table, took a bite of toast, and chewed like she was grinding down her anger.
“This is all your fault!” a shrill voice accused.
It was Lacey, Serena's maid.
“If it weren’t for you, Ms. Lawson wouldn’t have disappeared!”
