Tyler was speeding in his car when Annika’s call came through.
“Hello? Hello?” he said several times, but got no response. Realizing something was wrong, he fell silent. Then, he heard a vicious voice from the other end. “Scared now, are you, Annika?”
“Aunt Yelena, the baby is innocent! Please, give him to me… I’m begging you.” Annika’s helpless voice was laced with a barely concealed panic.
Tyler’s jaw tightened. He slammed his foot on the accelerator. Annika’s child was in mortal danger; he had to get there and help her. He didn’t dare hang up. He knew Annika had called him on purpose, wanting him to hear everything.

“Someone’s going to jump!” Below, a person in the street spotted the figure on the Century Apex rooftop and raised their phone in shock. “It’s true, it’s a woman!” A crowd quickly gathered, everyone filming the scene. The video soon went viral on Twitter, with the news that someone was attempting to jump from Century Apex spreading like wildfire. Police sirens wailed as squad cars arrived. Officers jumped out, quickly setting up an airbag below the woman’s position and shouting through a megaphone, “Ma’am, please don’t do this! Life is beautiful!”
Conrad saw the retweeted video but initially paid it no mind. Then he noticed the woman threatening to jump looked a bit like Serena’s mother, Yelena. He replayed the video several times, confirming it was her. When he saw her holding a blurry bundle in her arms, an inexplicable tightness gripped his chest. He didn’t know what he was nervous about. He just wondered when Yelena had gotten out of prison.
