After a moment's thought, she composed a text: [Don't worry, I'll take good care of him.]
He replied almost instantly: [I don't worry about you, Annika. I worry about your future husband. If my son suffers even the slightest bit, I will come after you.]
Her future husband? Annika's attention snagged on that phrase, and her mind went blank for a second. She typed another message: [I can't promise you I won't have my own family one day. But no matter what, I will always treat Monroe well. I love him more than you do.]
Annika knew she couldn't afford to be confrontational with Conrad. After living with him for two years, she was well aware that he responded to a soft approach, not a hard one. To secure custody of Monroe, she swallowed her pride and lowered her stance, offering him a string of assurances.
One of her messages must have struck a nerve, because he suddenly went silent. Annika stared at the screen for a long time. Just as she thought he wouldn't reply, her phone buzzed again. She looked down and saw his message:
[You'd better do as you say. Otherwise, don't blame me for what happens.]
In his office, Conrad sat texting Annika while looking at photos Nolan had sent him. In the pictures, Monroe's eyes and brows were a clear reflection of his own, with the other half of his features favoring Annika. He fought the overwhelming urge to rush to the hospital to see his son, terrified it would spook Annika and, worse, make her run away with Monroe for good. He still couldn't find the words to describe the cold-hearted cruelty of that woman. She had actually… claimed Monroe was gone. She had used such a lie to keep him from his own son. The thought of Annika building a new family with another man was like a knife slowly twisting in his heart, each turn an agonizing slice that made his chest ache.
But Conrad's thoughts did not represent the rest of the Beryl family. When Zoltan learned his great-grandson was alive, he didn't sleep a wink. The next day, at the crack of dawn, he arrived at the hospital in person, leaning on Yazmin's arm, to see Monroe.
Lana was stunned to see the patriarch himself. She immediately called Annika, who rushed back to the hospital. When she arrived, she saw Zoltan cooing at Monroe in Yazmin’s arms. She approached cautiously and greeted him.
