His Regret Arrived Three Days Late novel Chapter 15

Harvey’s anger grew as he spoke, venting all his frustrations with Conrad onto Hank.

“Mr. Beryl… he’s been busy,” Hank stammered, his own voice trembling.

“Excuses,” Harvey sneered, then got into his car without another word.

Hank waited outside while Harvey waited in the car. When Annika emerged from the bank, Hank rushed over to her. “How did it go? Did Nathan Ziegler agree to extend the loan to the Sargent Group?”

Annika looked at him, her eyes vacant and lost. She gave a slight shake of her head.

Hank’s patience snapped. He started to march back toward the bank, but Annika grabbed his arm.

“Given the company’s current situation, no bank would be willing to lend to us. It’s understandable, Hank.”

He looked at her with pained eyes. “I’ll call Mr. Beryl. Nathan is nothing but a greedy son of a bitch.”

Annika pressed her hand over his, stopping him from dialing. “Our divorce hasn’t been made public, so Nathan knows I’m still Conrad’s wife. If he still refused the loan, a call from Conrad won’t make a difference.”

Hank knew it was just an excuse. A woman as proud as Annika would never beg for Mr. Beryl’s pity.

And the truth was, Mr. Beryl wasn’t entirely unaware of the Sargent Group’s troubles, but he had remained silent, watching from the sidelines. Several times, Hank had wanted to bring it up, but the words always died on his lips.

Hank’s heart ached for Annika. A fragile woman, all alone, and carrying Mr. Beryl’s child in her belly... His gaze fell to her flat stomach, and a strange, sharp pain pierced his own heart.

“Don’t tell him I’m pregnant,” she said, opening the car door. As she got in, she looked back at him.

Hank opened his mouth to say something more, but Harvey had already started the engine, and the car sped away, leaving him in a cloud of dust.

...

Later, after Annika had returned to the hospital to care for her father, Conrad called.
