Two days had passed without a word from Conrad.
After finishing her work at the Sargent Group, Annika rubbed her temples and gazed out at the setting sun. An image of Monroe's rosy cheeks and adorable, toothless smile filled her mind, tugging at her heart. She missed her baby.
Without a second thought, she grabbed her phone and dialed Conrad's number. It rang twice before he picked up.
When silence greeted her, Annika asked, "Are you busy?"
Conrad's voice, mingled with the faint scratching of a pen on paper, came through the line. "Just finishing the last document. What's up?"
Annika hesitated, biting her lip. "Conrad, I want to see Monroe."
He didn't even have to think about it. "Okay," he said immediately. "I'll come pick you up after I finish this."
He hung up before she could reply. For the sake of the Sargent Group and to get Monroe back, she knew she had to maintain this fragile, friendly relationship with Conrad.
Just as Annika stepped out of the Sargent Group building, Conrad's black SUV pulled up beside her. The window rolled down, revealing his handsome face. She walked around the front of the car, settled into the passenger seat, and fastened her seatbelt. The car sped off toward the Beryl Manor.
When Annika arrived to see Monroe, Zoltan couldn't very well refuse. Beth brought the baby downstairs, and as soon as Annika took him, Monroe broke into a gummy smile, his eyes shining. The gloom that had settled over Annika's heart instantly vanished.
She gave her son a bath, wrapped him in a towel, and dressed him in his little pajamas before taking him downstairs for his milk. She didn't realize that Conrad was sitting on the sofa behind her, a newspaper in his hands, his gaze drifting repeatedly to her and the baby.
