Naturally, people began to doubt Serena's public displays of affection.
The first time Annika saw such news, she might have felt a flicker of something. But after the second and third time, she only felt numb—then contempt. That man had nothing to do with her anymore. She didn't need to feel sad or hurt, she told herself repeatedly.
To Annika's surprise, Yazmin and Estelle showed up at her office one day.
The moment Yazmin saw her, she burst into tears. "Annika, how could you be so cruel?"
Seeing that Yazmin had come to confront her about the baby, Annika remained silent.
"Annika, that was your child, too. How could you just get rid of it..." Yazmin's words trailed off into a choked sob, her eyes growing redder. "It's all my fault. I wasn't blessed enough to have your child call me 'Grandma.'"
"Yazmin, Serena is pregnant now. I'm sure it won't be long before she gives the Beryl family a healthy baby."
At the mention of Serena, Yazmin’s expression soured.
Estelle, standing beside her, quickly added, "Just this morning, Mom kicked that shameless woman out of the house."
"Annika, are you blaming me for taking her in?" Yazmin was filled with genuine regret. If she hadn't taken pity on Serena for losing her legs, she wouldn't have let her stay, and her son and daughter-in-law would never have divorced. She had kept Serena close, thinking she could keep an eye on her, but she had ended up nurturing a viper. She regretted it deeply.
"No," Annika replied, her voice calm and distant.
"I know you blame me. After seeing the news online, I couldn't stand to be under the same roof with her for another second, so I threw her out. She's nothing but a manipulative schemer." Yazmin's disgust for Serena was palpable.
