“That's because Serena's legs are broken. She can't satisfy him,” Annika stated bluntly.
“Annika…” Hank tried to say more, but she cut him off sharply.
“Don't.”
Her face was twitching with anger. Nothing Hank could say would quell the rage building inside her. She had put up with Conrad for long enough.
Suddenly, Hank's phone buzzed. He glanced down and saw ‘Mr. Beryl’ on the screen, his brow furrowing deeply. His heart pounded for a few seconds before he swiped to answer. “Hello?”
“Is this Hank Lennox?”
The voice wasn't Conrad's; it was a stranger.
“Yes, this is he.”
“This is Nolan, Mr. Beryl's assistant. Mr. Beryl said you have your final paycheck to collect. He'd like you to come and get it.”
“Right now?” Hank asked, glancing at the glittering city lights outside.
“Anytime,” Nolan replied.
“Alright.”
Hank ended the call and stood in silence.
Annika narrowed her eyes. “Who was that?”
The ambulance arrived, its siren wailing. The paramedics loaded Hank onto a stretcher, and Annika climbed in with them as the vehicle raced to the hospital.
Hank was critically injured and unconscious. After surgery, he was moved to the ICU. The driver fled the scene and was nowhere to be found.
Nolan showed up, offering a string of apologies.
Annika's smile was glacial. She learned from him that Conrad was at Serena Villa, and she drove straight there.
She knew Conrad owned a property called Serena Villa, purchased two years ago, but she'd never been. She'd always figured a man of his status would have multiple properties. But when she knocked on the door and it was opened by Serena's beautiful, gentle face, Annika felt as if she'd been plunged into an abyss.
Serena Villa. The house was named after her. After Yazmin had kicked her out of the Beryl Manor, Conrad had moved her here.
If that wasn't love, what was?
