The smile on Miles's lips faded slightly, though Lyra was too distracted to notice.
"Why do you say that?"
She gazed out the window at the blurred city lights.
"I don't know... just a random thought."
She was getting sleepy.
Ever since she was a little girl, car rides had acted like a sedative on her.
Between a full day of shopping with Eleanor and the late hour, she was thoroughly exhausted.
She was already dozing off.
Noticing her voice growing fainter, Miles glanced over and saw her eyes were closed. She was out cold.
He didn't speak again, simply switching the radio to a soft, acoustic playlist.
Lyra slept soundly.
She didn't even stir when the car pulled into the airport drop-off zone.
Miles checked his phone. They were still two hours away from boarding. There was plenty of time.
He didn't wake her. Instead, he muted his phone and sat in the quiet darkness, simply watching her.
Lyra was jolted awake by the sudden blast of a car horn.
Her eyes flew open, and she accidentally bumped her head against the window, letting out a sharp groan.
"Awake?"
Miles's voice was low and calm.
She turned to him, rubbing her head, still half-asleep. "What time is it? Did I sleep long?"
"Not too long. You still have an hour and a half before boarding. Your luggage is light, so you have plenty of time."
Hearing that, Lyra relaxed.
"Alright, I should get going. See you when I get back."
She unbuckled her seatbelt and reached for the door handle.
Miles got out from his side, popped the trunk, and pulled out her suitcase.
"I'll walk you in."
Lyra looked up at him in surprise. "Aren't you in a rush to get back to the base?"
Miles shook his head, gripping the handle of her suitcase. "No matter how busy I am, I always have time to see you off."
Lyra didn't argue. They walked toward the terminal entrance side by side.
"Are you really not planning on returning to the company?"
