Thinking about it now filled Aria with bitter regret.
She shouldn't have had to suffer like this.
But then again, if she had upgraded to First Class, she might have run into Lyra, which would have made her feel even worse.
"Max, Mr. Jude personally invited us. He clearly sees your potential. We just have to work hard and make everyone who looked down on us regret it!"
Before Maxwell could respond, the burly man seated next to Aria snapped.
"Do you two have zero manners? People are trying to sleep. Keep your mouths shut!"
The man was built like a tank, looking thoroughly intimidating. Aria immediately shrank back, too terrified to say another word.
She could only thank her lucky stars she was wearing a face mask. At least no one would recognize her, saving her from total humiliation.
Maxwell glared at her. His eyes were filled with simmering resentment, but he kept his mouth shut, turning his head to stare out the window.
By the time the plane touched down, it was snowing heavily in the US.
Thankfully, Eleanor had warned Lyra beforehand, so she had packed a heavy down coat. She changed immediately upon landing and didn't feel the chill at all.
The driver Harrison had arranged was already waiting at the arrivals curb. She slipped into the warm car and headed straight for the hotel.
Meanwhile, Aria and Maxwell had a completely different experience.
They hadn't brought winter coats, nor had they pre-booked transportation. In the middle of a blizzard, any available cab was charging triple the normal rate.
They stood freezing at the taxi stand for agonizingly long minutes before finally securing a ride—at an extortionate price.
The next morning.
Lyra woke up early, texted her mother that she was safe, and headed down to the hotel's ground-floor restaurant for breakfast.
The moment she walked in, she spotted a very familiar man eating a few tables away.
The phrase "enemies are bound to cross paths" had never been more accurate.
In her wildest dreams, Lyra hadn't expected to be booked into the exact same hotel as Maxwell and Aria.
