"I really regret everything. I just want you to give me a chance to fix things between us. Lyra, we can start over, can't we?"
Lyra tried to sit up, but Maxwell blocked her path. With her hands bound, she was completely powerless.
Sensing her struggle, Maxwell gently helped her sit up. Breathing in her scent, he pulled her tightly into his arms.
She was his lost treasure, finally found.
She was the reason he had found meaning in his life again.
He refused to let go, his grip tightening with every passing second.
Wincing in pain, Lyra snapped, "Let me go! You're hurting me!"
Maxwell immediately loosened his hold, looking apologetic. "Lyra, I'm sorry. I was just too excited."
"You...!" Lyra was at a total loss for what to do with him.
To put it bluntly, her life was currently dangling by a thread in Maxwell's hands.
Her only beacon of hope was that unanswered emergency call.
If no one came to save her, the worst-case scenario meant she had to find a way to save herself.
"Lyra, let's not argue anymore, okay? I didn't appreciate you before, but that will never happen again. I promise, I'll be so gentle with you from now on."
As he spoke, he tore at his collar, shrugging off his jacket and tossing it aside.
"I really couldn't get used to not having you by my side all these days. Let's just go back to how we were, okay?"
If Lyra hadn't fully grasped his intentions before, his words and the sight of the camera set up nearby made everything sickeningly clear.
