Hearing this, Miles turned to look at her, noticing her expression was cold and distant, nothing like before.
She was blaming him.
The moment the thought crossed his mind, Miles understood everything.
Whether it was him missing the one-month deadline or failing to contact her the entire time.
She had every right to be furious.
Miles had no choice but to set Lyra down. He had barely opened his mouth to explain when Lyra cut him off.
"I was worried before. I thought maybe you were having a hard time out here. But clearly, I overthought it. You're doing just fine, aren't you, Mr. Gardner?"
Hearing that title, Miles froze, staring at her in sheer disbelief.
He thought he had hidden it flawlessly. How did she find out?
A self-deprecating smirk touched Lyra's lips. "Was it really that hard to guess? A head of white hair, hailing from Averston, an illegitimate son left wandering the outside world. Put all those clues together, and it doesn't take a genius to figure it out. The Gardners of Averston are indeed a prestigious dynasty. While they might not be worlds apart from the Lennox Family, they are definitely a formidable force."
She took a deep breath, slowly reining in her emotions.
"I couldn't figure it out before, but now I know all my worrying was for nothing. But whatever. None of this matters to me anymore."
Lyra didn't know why she was thinking this way, nor could she stop herself from spouting such hurtful words.
But the thought of going an entire month without a single word from him stung.
It was as if he had completely vanished from her life without leaving a single trace behind.
He had promised a month. She had claimed she didn't care, but she found herself constantly checking the date.
Miles was late.
He promised a month, but it took him thirty-five days to finally show up.
