Lyra stopped in her tracks. Maxwell quickly caught up to her, his voice dripping with mockery.
"Why did you stop? Don't tell me you're already regretting it."
"Maxwell."
Lyra's voice cut through the air.
Maxwell instinctively hummed in response, a look of absolute triumph settling over his features.
It was as if he was entirely convinced that Lyra would backtrack on leaving him.
"I thought you were a master manipulator. Turns out, I severely overestimated you."
Lyra turned to face him, the sheer coldness in her eyes making Maxwell freeze in place.
"Are you really trying to crush me with public opinion?"
Before Maxwell could even process her words, she kept going.
"The moment that thirty-day cooling-off period ends, I'll be right back here to sign the final papers. I will never regret this. Not ever."
Lyra reached for her phone, but before she could do anything, Maxwell snatched it out of her hand.
"Lyra, this is my final warning. Once we walk out those doors today, there is no turning back. I won't look back, and I will marry someone else. Knowing all of that, are you still going to be this stubborn?"
Facing Maxwell's look of utter disbelief, Lyra took a deep breath and spoke with chilling calm. "Who exactly is being stubborn here? I've made myself perfectly clear—there is no future for us. You agreed to this divorce, so why do you keep going back on your word? Don't even try to tell me it's because you've fallen in love with me. Do you even believe your own lies?"
Finished with her piece, Lyra reached out to take her phone back, but Maxwell held it high above his head, keeping it just out of her reach.
He was doing it on purpose.
He just wanted to get a rise out of her.
Lyra forced herself to remain calm, a faint, almost pitying smile touching her lips.
