Chapter 278
A plane touched down at River City Airport.
A woman in stilettos removed her sunglasses, her shoulder–length hair whipping in the wind. She drew a long breath, a smile curling her lips.
“River City… long time no see.”
Her assistant hurried up. “Viola, the hotel’s booked. The one you like best.”
Viola tilted her head, eyeing the petite girl beside her. She lifted a hand, hooking the girl’s chin, revealing a face as fresh as a daisy.
“Good girl. I knew picking you as my assistant was the right choice.”
They walked out together.
At the hotel, she pulled open the curtains. Across the skyline stood the towering Moore Tower–cold and gray, just like Marcus himself.
Viola sank into a chair, taking the glass of wine her assistant handed over.
“Everything ready?”
“Yes. I’ve already coordinated with Zoe. She’s thrilled you’ll be her makeup artist.”
Viola swirled the glass, the strong liquor burning her nose. She took a slow sip, then smiled darkly.
“Funny. Who would’ve thought I’d end up working alongside Marcus’s precious wife?”
Her assistant raised her glass. “Of course I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait to see her face when she sees me. Maybe she’ll be so scared she’ll lose the baby.”
They laughed, glasses clinking. Viola arched a brow.
“Wait and see.”
Since the moment Viola’s name resurfaced, Marcus had been on edge.
He knew better than anyone: she was his equal in skill. If she could build the Viola Group from scratch, she wasn’t someone to underestimate.
If she’d come back, it meant every detail was already planned. Worst–case? Mutual destruction.
Marcus rubbed at his temples as Ethan Chen laid the files before him. He couldn’t afford to drag the Moore Group down with him. If it came to ruin, the company and its employees couldn’t be collateral damage.
“Sir, are you sure?” Ethan’s voice was tight, hands trembling as he held out the transfer documents.
Marcus nodded without hesitation. He had no choice.
He dispersed his shares, ensuring the company could function without him. The majority went to Sophie’s parents and her brother. Alexander. Another portion went to Shallow.
News spread fast. Evan Blake was the first to call.
“Marcus! What the hell are you doing? You don’t even talk to your brothers about this? You think you can handle all this alone? And now you’re giving away your shares? Have you lost your mind?”
It was the first time Evan had ever spoken to him so harshly.
But Marcus only replied coldly. “This isn’t your concern.” Then he hung up.

Chapter 278
Later, Sophie called.
“I’ve got everything ready. The Fashion Gala is in three days.”
Marcus finally let a faint smile touch his lips. “Good.”
But Sophie caught the weariness in his voice. “Are you okay?”
“Just tired,” he said with a cough.
When they hung up, her heart still clenched with worry.
To avoid prying eyes, they had moved back into Sophie’s apartment.
Just as she reached for her phone again, a knock sounded at the door.
She glanced through the peephole–and froze.
“Ethan Monroe?”
She cracked the door open. His eyes were bloodshot.
“Sophie, there’s no time. Will you come with me?”
She stepped back, planting herself by the cabinet near the entryway. One hand hovered near the baseball bat. One step closer, and she wouldn’t hesitate to swing.
“Viola isn’t just back for revenge,” Ethan pressed, chest heaving from climbing eighteen floors after bypassing security. “She wants Marcus dead.”
“I know,” Sophie answered coldly. “That’s why I’ll face it with him.”
Ethan’s gaze dropped to her belly, his face softening. “Think of the baby. If you come with me, I’ll protect you both. I’ll raise the child like my own.”
Before Sophie could answer, the elevator chimed.
Marcus strode out, shrugging off his jacket, loosening his tie. Without a word, he slammed his fist into Ethan’s face.
The blow sent him sprawling. Ethan staggered up against the wall, his eyes icy
“You’ve crossed the line,” Marcus growled, blocking the doorway with his broad frame.
“You’re the one hurting her, chaining her to you!” Ethan snapped, but another stumble sent him back down.
“My wife is mine to protect,” Marcus shot back, his voice like steel.
Guards rushed in, hauling Ethan away.
Only then did Sophie release her breath. She ran into Marcus’s arms, her heartbeat pounding wildly.
He stroked her back, whispering, “It’s over. You’re safe.”
