An inexplicable wave of emotion swelled in Sienna's chest.
It felt like those marks didn't belong on him, not on the eternally flawless Jorrod Vaughn.
Yet here he was—a man raised in luxury, accustomed to sitting high on a pedestal—bearing chaotic scratches that didn't suit him. All so he could quietly, without a single complaint, curl up on the floor of her small bedroom just because she sprained her ankle.
The weather had turned cold, and the apartment had no heating. Afraid of causing a fuss, Jorrod had only laid down a single thin blanket. It had to be hard and freezing.
She remembered a popular internet saying: she was really treating him poorly.
Sienna closed her eyes, forcing herself to sleep.
But she struggled internally and opened them again.
Her heart softened, but she couldn't find a logical reason why.
Was she heartbroken?
No, that wasn't right.
She must just feel sorry for that incredible physique suffering on the floor.
She didn't agree with Jorrod's methods, but she couldn't deny that his breathtakingly perfect face and powerfully built body were easy on the eyes.
The tiny voices in her head brawled for a moment before she quickly convinced herself.
She opened her mouth.
Her voice was tiny, but in the dead of night, it pierced the darkness abruptly.
"Are you asleep?"
Jorrod didn't turn around. He simply replied, "No."
Pulling the blanket higher over her face, Sienna forced a casual, breezy tone. "Sleeping down there... um, is it a bit hard?"
She heard the man, still facing away, give a faint "Mm."
"Are you... uncomfortable?"
Another "Mm."
Alright then.
The stage was set.
"Since it's uncomfortable, why don't you come up here and sleep... the bed is pretty big." Sienna was certain Jorrod would get up without a second thought. She even preemptively scooted closer to the edge to make room.
But after a brief rustle, a suffocating, awkward silence blanketed the room.
Jorrod completely ignored her.
This was the first time in Sienna's life she had invited a man into her bed, only to get the cold shoulder.
"The floor, the floor! I was talking about the floor!"
Jorrod turned his head. Staring at the woman who was completely hidden save for her eyes, her knuckles white from gripping the blanket, he watched her for a few seconds.
He remained perfectly composed. "My apologies. I misunderstood."
The calmer he was, the more it made her look like she had no filter.
Sienna buried her entire head under the covers, plunging herself into darkness.
It felt like it was her own fault.
Her phrasing had been terrible.
The room fell silent once more.
Sienna was fully prepared to just sleep with the blanket over her head to ignore the embarrassment.
Suddenly, a rustle came from the opposite side. Jorrod sat up, swiftly grabbed his thin blanket, walked around the foot of the bed, and lay down on the empty side of the large mattress.
Sienna's heart gave a sudden lurch as she felt the mattress dip deeply beside her.
Two people, back to back.
Sharing one bed, each lost in their own thoughts.
